In May 1781, George Washington stood right here at the Joseph Webb House to meet with French commander Rochambeau and plan the military campaign that would end the Revolutionary War at Yorktown.

This Memorial Day weekend, bring the whole family and step into that story at our annual Revolutionary War Encampment & Traditional Trades Fair.

Try your hand at colonial crafts and traditional trades in the Webb Barn, hunt for treasures with our scavenger hunt starting at the Wethersfield Historical Society, and find a quiet moment to reflect in our Rotary Room.

We are so excited to join forces with the Traditional Trades Fair for a full day marking America’s 250th anniversary.

The free festivities will begin on the Museum grounds immediately following the Town of Wethersfield's Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 23. Join us for a day of fun for the entire family.

Karen Elting Brock, Editor at PieceWork Magazine recently published two pieces about the museum's new exhibition, American Girlhood: Needlework, Memory, and the Making of a Nation that debuted on May 1st — including a feature on guest curator Emily Whitted.

Two hundred and fifty years after the founding of the United States, American Girlhood: Needlework, Memory, and the Making of a Nation turns to the girls who stitched their way into history.

The exhibition was guest-curated by Emily Whitted, with collaboration from Stephen & Carol Huber.

In 1776, a man named James Aitken, also known as "John The Painter", concocted a plan to attack British naval ports, specifically Portsmouth.

He forced his way into a meeting with American Diplomat Silas Deane in Paris, leaving convinced he had the green light to commit acts of terror. Deane, clearly unsettled, handed him a few pounds. Perhaps just to make him disappear. He never publicly took responsibility, nor condemned what followed.

History is full of stories like this, moments that never make the textbooks, yet give us glimpses into the real lives of the figures we were taught about.

What else didn't make the history books? Find out at the Feuding Founders Wethersfield Symposium: The Making of Silas Deane, where we dig into the stories that were never meant to be told.

Spend the day with us, or pop in for the roundtable discussion with of , and Suzanne Clary of in collab with .

These schoolgirl samplers and needlepoint pieces have been collected, treasured, and passed down for centuries. But why?

What is it about these objects that keeps drawing us in?

We're sitting down with textile historian Ned Lazaro — Associate Curator of Textiles and Costumes at The Wadsworth Atheneum and former curator at Historic Deerfield — to dig into the history of collecting these pieces in America and what our fascination with them says about us.

Join us May 14, on Zoom.
*Please note that this lecture is now only on Zoom.

He co-founded the U.S. Navy, negotiated America's first foreign alliance, and stood beside Benjamin Franklin when history was being made. He also backed Benedict Arnold before the betrayal, mentored a man who became a British spy, and watched his own legacy unravel in real time.

Silas Deane signed the first foreign treaty in American history. He helped arm the Continental Army. He was one of the most consequential figures of the American Revolution, and almost no one remembers his name.

And he is just one of four.

Feuding Founders Collective is our deep dive into the human side of the Revolutionary era. We'll pull back the curtain on the full, complicated picture of Silas Deane, John Jay, Richard Henry Lee, and Francis Lightfoot Lee and. The rise, the fall, and everything in between. Come hear the stories that haven't always been shared in the first of a three-part series across state lines, in partnership with Stratford Hall, Menokin: Re-Imagining A Ruin, and Jay Heritage Center.
