In honor of Earth Day 2026, here is Russel Wright's home Dragon Rock (ca 1961) which features a massive cedar tree trunk, boulders and ferns within its interior, and here enhanced by the reflections of his surrounding woodland landscape. The experimental house has numerous built-in elements that integrate design and nature and its "green roof" was ahead of its time.

Russel Wright, his daughter Ann Wright, her friend, and nanny Diana Boyce dining at Dragon Rock on a winter evening. Photo was part of a series taken by Farrell Grehan for the feature article “A Wonderful House to Live In” that appeared in the March 16, 1962 issue of LIFE Magazine.

Wright seasonally changed the furnishings at Dragon Rock, including pillows, window coverings, cabinet doors and light fixtures. In winter, warm colors prevailed in contrast to the stark outdoors. His candle-lit winter chandelier created the perfect mood for dining and conversation.
