Meet the Artists: Discover Handmade at Garrison Craft

Get to know the talented artists joining us at Garrison Craft in our Meet the Artists series! Featured here is R. Nemo Hill & Julio Perea of EXOT BLUE DYERS.

For Julio and Nemo, everything they do in life is its own form of art. The duo specializes in indigo-dyed textiles and Shibori, an endlessly experimental technique that involves folding, tying, stitching, or manipulating fabric before dyeing. They’ve used everything from poker chips and old coins to chopsticks and copper tubing to create their distinctive patterns.

Their studio is a 1824 stone house in the Catskills, where a ramshackle cottage serves as their wonderfully messy workspace. “When your life is your art then your whole house is your studio,” they say.

At Garrison Craft, they’ll bring indigo-dyed scarves, shawls, aprons, dishtowels, T-shirts, vintage shirts, and 100% cotton sweatshirts, along with new Tussah raw silk scarves.

And their creative lives extend beyond textiles: Nemo is a published author of a novel, travel memoir, and six books of poetry, while Julio’s private studio is filled with sculptures, many made from indigo-dyed wood and nails.

They’ve participated in Garrison Craft several times and love the riverside setting, helpful organizers, and warm, friendly customers keep bringing them back. 💙

What does a “mother tree” look like when imagined as something larger than life?

The "Mother Tree", 2025 by artist Lawre Stone, is a deep green plant form fills the canvas. Larger than life, its otherworldly leaves, stems, and exposed roots rise before a horizonless atmosphere. Thickly painted circular forms hover on the surface, a reference to botanical diagrams or perhaps to the center of a flower, and serve as a portal to an abstract world. The title refers to a mother tree, the largest and oldest tree in a forest, acting as a central hub that nurtures and communicates with younger saplings.

What happens when a coastline is redrawn by a storm?

In "GHOST COAST: A Hurricane Sandy Periplus of Lower Manhattan", artist Julie Harrison collaborates with poet E.J. McAdams and Granary Books to explore Manhattan’s changing coastline.

The current boundary of Manhattan is a smooth line of armored coast with a few piers left over from a more industrial waterfront. On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy pummeled New York City, damaging infrastructure, thrusting downtown residents into a blackout, and redrawing the coast of lower Manhattan. This new coast corresponded to the contours of earlier maps before the addition of infill for development, and it introduced aberrant inundations almost a mile inland across the channelized hardscape of the city. GHOST COAST juxtaposes the current and catastrophic coasts, illuminating resonances between and across both.

A periplus was a tool for nautical navigation in the ancient world, describing in words the details of the coast including landmarks in harbors, treacherous obstacles below the surface of the water, and reports about the people on land and what they traded. The text of GHOST COAST is a periplus made only of verbs, and therefore of questionable use; the verb agreement is as off-kilter as the ravaged coast.

GHOST COAST is currently on view in Julie Harrison's exhibition 'Rising Tide' on view now at Garrison Art Center through September 6. Gallery hours are Tues. - Sun., 10 AM - 5 PM.

Meet the Artists: Get to know the talented artists, musicians, and makers joining us at Garrison Craft. Next up is Jasperoo!

This Hudson Valley acoustic duo, John Bunge on banjo & guitar and Mary Beth Bunge on guitar, play instrumental American folk, blues, and ragtime, drawing from the rich tradition of old-time music and its many styles. Some of their tunes began in other musical traditions but found a natural home in their old-time sound.
Jasperoo keeps things intimate creating a close connection with their audience. They’ve played Garrison Craft for several years and love the vendors, visitors, staff, and fellow musicians who make the event special.

Featured throughout the exhibition are works created using a range of traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques. A direct print, as seen in Kelp by , uses kelp and watercolor printed directly onto Lotka paper.
