Taken briefly by the British in 1777, the island was re-occupied by American forces in 1778, and made a integral part of Fortress West Point. The Island is open from April through October. Guided tours are available and depart from West Point's South Dock.

Before Lin-Manuel Miranda made him a household name, Alexander Hamilton was a Captain in an artillery company.

In 1776, at 21 years old, he raised a company of artillerymen for the Continental Army. His discipline and precision at the Battles of Trenton and Princeton impressed George Washington so much that Washington made him his top aide.
