Join local historian Tim Warn at the Lincoln Depot Museum for a look at The Boys from Peekskill in the American Civil War - as well as the story of the recently restored 9,000 pound cannon placed in the Hillside Cemetery, more than a century ago, as a memorial to their memory.

The 1st Rhode Island Regiment
Forgotten Valor in the Cause of Liberty
with Dr. Aaron Mair

The 1st Rhode Island was called by a number of names: The Rhode Island Regiment, The Black Regiment, and others. Unlike most Continental Army units, the 1st Rhode Island was composed largely of black enlistees, including former slaves, as well as some indigenous people. It was one of the few Regiments to serve the entire duration of the war – from the Siege of Boston to the Army’s disbandment in 1783. One historian noted, “There is no record of a popular outcry against the black presence, no record of fights or interdisciplinary problems caused by racial integration. The common white New England soldier seems to have accepted blacks." Were they finally equal? Hardly.

Join us at The Lincoln Depot as we welcome Dr. Aaron Mair to share the amazing full story of the 1st Rhode Island – including the Yorktown, NY Battle of Pine’s Bridge in 1781. Where did they come from? Where did they serve? Why? And what became of the men after the war?

Gettysburg Day 2: Hood Attacks the Union Left

John Bell Hood led the right wing of James Longstreet’s assault against the Union left flank. Hood had argued against a direct attack, preferring to maneuver around the Union position, but his objections were overruled. Lee had made up his mind. Around 4:00 p.m., his division advanced across rough, rocky terrain toward areas including Devil’s Den, Little Round Top, and the Peach Orchard.

Early in the attack, Hood was severely wounded in the left arm by an exploding artillery shell, forcing him from the field. Despite fierce fighting and initial Confederate gains at Devil’s Den and parts of the nearby rocky terrain, the assault became disorganized. Union reinforcements, most famously the defense of Little Round Top, prevented a Confederate breakthrough. By nightfall, Hood’s attack had failed to achieve its objective, leaving heavy casualties on both sides and contributing to the overall Confederate failure to turn the Union left flank.

It’s the late 1770s, and you’ve been in the Continental Army for two years. You’ve only faced the British on a few occasions – and it didn’t go well. But you walked away unscathed…for now. It’s brutally cold and you’ve got 20 miles more to march through the snow before reaching camp; your feet are wrapped only in thin linen, and they’re starting to turn blue, in some spots ashen gray. What could THAT mean? It can’t be good…

What was it like to face such conditions? What was it like for the medical professionals who cared for soldiers facing those terrible conditions?
