Antipodean Books, Maps & Prints Founded in 1976, we sell & buy fine rare & old books, maps, prints, ephemera, photographs & postcards on a myriad of subjects.

Post cards from the Mazzon school which was founded it in 1929, and became famous in Italy and beyond. Sr Mazzon kbanned students from copying from nature and encouraged spontaneous expression of emotion, fantasy, imagination, and dreams. That explains the bold, stylized look. They are similar to the style of the Cizek school of Vienna though they were earlier.

I wasn’t able to get that information from the flags but I did find out that in the foreground there is “ A Chinese Pr******te riding in Publick with a Man going before, who makes known her Price.” It is staying in the tea collection…

In Rome our first stop was the Borghese Galleria but learned they were booked solid for the next two months… on return home, I found this 1881,week long pass to the villa sitting on my desk. .. in 1881 the villa and its grounds were still private property of the Borghese princes. The public could visit, but often only with a permit like this one, and with set closing days. The Italian state didn’t buy the 40 acres estate until 1901, and it became a public park in Rome soon after.

Hanging in a Rome restaurant, an advertising handbill for a free public course on w**e growing. Printed in 1871.
The timing is notable. Rome had been taken from the Papal States only six months earlier, in September 1870, so this notice comes from the brand-new municipal government. Offering free practical courses to working people fits the new Italian state’s push for public education

Today we visited one of the oldest public libraries in Europe, the Biblioteca Angelica which was opened by the Augustinian friars in 1609. They ran the library and studied and censored forbidden books but never destroyed them. This exhibition is of 32 of those books with the dominant theme of witchcraft, madness and exorcism. One of the highlights is a manuscript of the Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches), essentially an inquisitor’s handbook used to persecute supposed heretics and witches.

Today we visited the Etruscan Well in Perugia, It’s one of the best surviving examples of Etruscan hydraulic engineering along with the Etruscan Arch which were both built in the second half of the 3rd century BC, when Perugia was one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan League.

Incredible visit to La Specola Museum of Natural History. Started in the Age of Enlightenment, 1771 as a fountain of knowledge for the public. The highlight was the wax models of the human body. Every part and function including child birth accompanied with a pen and ink sketch. It took up to 200 cadavers to make a full body model. The photos show 2 body with its lymphatic system.
This was the first representation of the system that had been identified some years earlier.

This picture that I saw at the Uffizi is Luca Signorelli’s Allegory of Fertility and an Abundance. It was painted around 1500 in grisaille (shades of grey and brown) to imitate a sculpted relief. The seated woman nursing the children stands for fertility, the kneeling youth with the vine-leaf garland and the crown suggests a Bacchic figure, and the woman on the right with the bowl of fruit and grain represents abundance. After all the large, religious, bright coloured paintings this piece stood out to me.
