BOSCOBEL HOUSE AND GARDENS is considered one of the leading historic house museums in the Unites States. Its mansion holds the finest collection of New York Neoclassical furniture anywhere. Sited in the Hudson Valley, fifty miles north of Manhattan, Boscobel directly overlooks the Hudson River and West Point. Open to visitors six days a week from April through December, Boscobel House and Gardens

serves the local and international community with guided house tours of its admired interiors, delightful and educational programming for children, lectures by leading experts in design and architecture, unique and inspiring gallery exhibitions, and special events of matchless beauty. The mansion itself was first built in Montrose, New York between 1804 and 1808. Its original owner, States Morris Dyckman, was a wealthy Loyalist descended from one of the early Dutch families of New Amsterdam. By the 1950s, the federal government had built a veterans’ hospital on the property, and slated the house for demolition. Dedicated preservationists recovered as many architectural fragments as possible with a goal toward rebuilding Boscobel elsewhere. With strong personal investment and financial support from Reader’s Digest co-founder Lila Acheson Wallace, Boscobel found a new, permanent home on its current site in Garrison, New York. The mansion was restored and furnished based on surviving, original inventories and photography. When Boscobel opened its doors to museum visitors in 1961, then-Governor of New York Nelson A. Rockefeller called it “one of the most beautiful houses ever built in America.”

The mission of Boscobel House and Gardens is to enrich the lives of its visitors with memorable experiences of the history, culture, and environment of the Hudson River Valley.

Join us at Boscobel House and Gardens for the kick-off to the Hudson River Valley 250 & Beyond event series on July 10!

Boscobel Executive Director and Curator Jennifer Carlquist will welcome guests at the historic site’s salon for an educational talk about what life was like for Loyalists who lived in the Hudson River Valley before, during, and after the American Revolution, including Boscobel’s own Dyckman family.

While often dismissed by history as the “losing side,” most Loyalists remained in, or returned to, the United States after the war, becoming as American as their Patriot counterparts. Navigating these sites and their histories offers a richer, more nuanced understanding of America’s founding and the people who lived through it. The Loyalist sites and families discussed will bring to life the uncertainty, risk, and deeply personal, cultural, and economic ties that divided families and communities so profoundly.

Putnam Theater Alliance returns with DIRT in staged readings across Putnam County

As part of the Putnam REV250 project, the Putnam Theater Alliance will present three staged readings of its successful 2024 production, DIRT, at three different locations in Putnam County during the first weekend in June.

It’s Boscobel’s birthday! 🎉🎂🥳

May marks 65 years as a public museum, and to celebrate, our collections team is bringing our archive to life, digitizing photos from Boscobel’s earliest days. These rare colorized snapshots take us back to the summer of 1961, when the house first opened, and was painted Wedgwood blue (a color they thought was appropriate for the period).

It wasn’t until the mid-1970s that a deeper understanding emerged. The discovery of the Dyckmans’ 1806 inventory and related papers, combined with paint analysis and a reinterpretation led by curator Berry Tracy, revealed Boscobel’s true colors and its now-iconic yellow ochre exterior.
