Today is the EEHDA Fall Garden Tour in Galveston, Texas. Tickets can be purchased at the Cottage at 1501 Postoffice. The LK House is pleasee to be one of the stops and we will also be offering discounted tours of the house. Check out this video to see just how far this yard has come in the last five years.

Are you interested in a unique experience? Before being known as the Moody Mansion, this house was built for Narcissa Willis in 1893, the same time the League_Kempner House was under constructin. After surviving the Great Storm of 1900, the house was purchased by William Moody for his family. Spend an evening and tour the mansion after dark in this lantern guided tour. A Tale of Two Tiles

Our first floor Servant's area, which includes the servant's hall, butler's pantry, kitchen, and kitchen pantry, has a fabulous hexagon tile floor. Each tile is individually set, and of the over 15,000 tiles in the area, only one was missing.

Unfortunately, looks are deceiving, and structural problems underneath the tile necessitated demolishing the kitchen floor. (Never fear; we did a careful demo and saved as many as we could).

The demo revealed something interesting. Although on the surface they appeared identical, the tiles near the doorway in the butler's pantry were not the same as the tiles in the other areas

We knew that Eliza Kempner, the second owner, had done some remodeling in the butler's pantry to build additional china cabinetry and modernize the sink, and apparently those changes led to some tile needing to be replaced.

As we began cleaning the salvaged kitchen tiles, we found a handful of the newer, thinner 1920s tiles mixed in with the original 1893 tiles, indicating that the kitchen floor had been patched in places.

Letting the house reveal its secrets and tell its history is one of our favorite parts of restoration, and we love sharing those stories with you.

We hit the jackpot on Saturday!! The Galveston Island Tree Conservancy was giving away trees at the GHF warehouse. If you follow us, you know our palm trees were attacked by Lethal Bronzing last year and we lost over 10% of our palm trees. With recommendations from the Tree Conservancy, we replanted with other species of trees to add diversity to our landscape. Thanks to the tree give-away, we are adding two bur oaks, four Anacua trees and an American beauty bush to our mix. These trees do well in our climate and the Anacua and American Beauty bush are great for the bees and birds. Daisy League and the other women of the WHPA who were instrumental in bringing trees to Galveston in 1901 would be proud of the work being done today by the Tree Conservancy to keep Galveston green.
