Painter Philip Guston was born in 1913. Eleven works by the artist are in the Modern’s collection, and one of his abstract drawings is on display now in the first-floor galleries.

Guston’s fifty-year career stands as a unique allegory of change in American art in the latter half of the twentieth century. The artist’s imagery evolved, moving from Symbolic Realism to Abstraction and back as he developed a searching form of autobiographical figuration.
