Attention high-school students: The deadline to apply for both the Teen/Artist Project (TAP) and High School Internships at the Modern is Sunday, August 30 at 11:59 pm—just one week from today!

Both of these opportunities take place throughout the academic year in the Modern’s education department. Sixteen students will be chosen for the free, selective TAP program, which offers educational enrichment for young artists. Four paid internships are also available.

Students chosen for the TAP program will work with Modern staff and regional and national artists to expand their art practice and knowledge. Students are selected through a portfolio and application process. This eight-month program meets three hours each Sunday at the Modern, and is as demanding as it is rewarding. Students are required to make a firm commitment to attend class regularly, participate in class discussions and group projects, and ultimately contribute work/projects for the TAP exhibition/catalogue at the close of each season. Paid internships at the Modern provide high school students with work experience and a sense of how education departments operate in a modern and contemporary art museum. Education department staff provide mentorship, assistance in developing hard and soft skills, and a collaborative professional environment for projects, programs, and events. Now that school is back in session, we’d like to thank everyone who participated in our 2026 Summer Art Camp and Art Study!

Led by Assistant Curator of Education Fernando Alvarez, talented community artists, and dedicated art camp assistants, Art Camp and Teen Art Study emphasized learning through direct observation of art and thoughtfully designed activities for children and teens ages 4–18. These art experiences crafted by artists Francisco Alvarado, Victoria Gonzales, Holly Gray, Claire Kennedy, Emily Lee, Christopher Najera, Kris Pierce, and Karinne Smith focused on artworks from the special exhibition “Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers.”

It was a fun summer full of creative expression, and we hope you’ll join us again next year!

The Communiversity Village and B.O.B. of DFW present the free screening of “TCB - The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing” this Saturday, August 22 at noon. Discover the life and legacy of Toni Cade Bambara, an influential writer, filmmaker, and cultural worker, who, with humor and deep insight, inspired a generation of artists to dedicate themselves to community empowerment.

This 105-minute screening is biographical and structured as a series of lessons on cultural organizing, gleaned from Bambara's life and shared by her friends, colleagues, and students. After the film, members of The Communiversity Village will share how her life serves as an example of activistpreneurship and how to embody her legacy in their work.

On your next visit to the Modern, pick up one of our new activity books as you explore the Museum’s collection! This colorful book is filled with creative exercises that help you think about and engage with artworks in new ways. Although this resource is mainly intended for children, it can inspire visitors of all ages. Activity books are free and available at the Modern’s information desk.

Join us next week on Friday, August 21 at 6:30 pm for a free performance by Dallas-based musician Jess Garland! She is bringing her celestial blend of harp and guitar loops, avant-garde pop, and ethereal jazz to the Modern as part of the special exhibition “Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers.”

This performance is part of Johnson’s “Stage,” a site-specific stage located in front of the Modern’s auditorium that hosts both programmed performances and spontaneous activations. This platform, where others can express themselves, emphasizes the reciprocal relationship between artist and audience, a central motif in Johnson’s practice.

A performer, filmmaker, and community arts leader, Garland has shared stages with Erykah Badu, The Suffers, and The Seratones, founded the nonprofit organization Swan Strings, and serves as Executive Director of Girls Rock Dallas.
