Did you know that the pillowy, white confections we enjoy in our hot cocoa☕️ were once derived from a swampy plant🌿 called marshmallow?
Native to Europe and North Africa, the plant’s root contains a thick, gluey substance, which can be extracted through boiling. Once strained, the extract can be used medicinally or sweetened and flavored to make a delicious treat. Although gelatin has replaced plant roots in modern marshmallows, it retains its plant-based origins in its name. Roast marshmallows and make memories at FROST❄️!

The classic red and white stripes on a candy cane encore peppermint’s❄️ bright, icy flavor. A hybrid between watermint and spearmint, peppermint plants rarely produce seeds🌱, instead spreading by rhizomes underground. Peppermint candy canes have been used for holiday decor🎄 and gingerbread houses for over a century. Stop by and spot the candy cane detail on the gingerbread creations at FROST!
Today is National Poinsettia Day! Native to Mexico, these colorful plants are not flowers but instead leaves, with the bright "petals" being modified leaves called bracts. Their actual flowers are the tiny yellow clusters at the center. This holiday bloom symbolizes joy and good cheer across many cultures. Snow❄️ is a fantastic insulator, meaning that while the weather up top may be frightful, the world below the surface is calm, quiet, and (comparatively) quite delightful. The snow we crunch over in our boots benefits the roots and seeds🌱 by regulating soil temperatures and providing an important water source when it melts in the spring. Many overwintering insects, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians also rely on this protective blanket, making snow an essential part of a healthy ecosystem.

Verglas is a mythical spirit, a caretaker and protector of our plants and animals during winter. Verglas took over three weeks to assemble by hand and is entirely made of faux poinsettia leaves. Happy Monday and welcome back to Gardening with Sommer. Today’s tip is using odd numbers in floral arrangements! In this video, Sommer uses natives such as ninebark, brown-eyed susan, turtlehead, purple coneflower, cup plant and mountain mint. Additionally, some annuals such as dalias and celosia , partnered with a few perennials such as guara, japanese anenome, stokes aster, hosta and allium! Get out into your gardens and share what creations you dream up!
