A screening & Talk back honoring Norman Parish Walls of Respect: Norman Parish and the Parish Art Gallery, is a documentary film honoring the life, work, and legacy of artist and art dealer Norman Parish. Parish was a pioneering Black gallerist in Washington, DC where he highlighted artists from the African Diaspora in the 1990s through the 2010s. Early in his career he participated in the creation of a mural known as the Wall of Respect with a group of politically active Black artists who later co-founded the AfriCOBRA Black arts movement in Chicago at the height of the Civil Rights Movement. This film is executive produced and directed by Susan Ericsson of SME Media LLC.

After the film, join Norman Parish III, the artist’s son and film’s associate producer for a panel discussion featuring artist and AfriCOBRA co-founderWadsworth Jarrell; Rhonda K. Brown (artist; City of Cleveland Senior Strategist for Arts & Culture; and daughter of Malcolm and Ernestine Brown who opened the Malcolm Brown Gallery in Shaker Heights in 1980, the first for-profit African American gallery in the country); and David Ramsey, CEO/Lead Curator of Deep Roots Experience. Moderated by Deidre McPherson from Assembly for the Arts.

This program is presented as part of the Greater Cleveland Urban Film Festival (GCUFF) in partnership with Assembly for the Arts and moCa.

Story Time w/ Adam Davis | FREE ONsite at moCa

Story Time is a series of intimate gatherings replicating the communal environment of fine artist Adam Davis’s studio at the historic St. Elmo Village.

Adam Davis is an educator, artist, advocate, and practitioner in the art of collaboration. He obsessively seeks to apply his passion for creativity, communication, and storytelling to assist in finding solutions to problems that hinder diverse and equitable cultural progression at the intersection of the arts and education. As a griot his works delve into building scaffolded archives on the African diaspora to ensure that the invaluable stories shared by communities around the globe are preserved for centuries to come.
Get immersed in Story Time at moCa Cleveland in partnership with CLE Print Room.

Acting simultaneously as performance, Q&A, and introduction to the long term legacy project Davis has created called Black Magic, attendees will be encouraged to make history under one roof. Davis will make 5 portraits, tell 5 audience selected stories from his travels around the country, and answer 5 questions from those in attendance. The catch: Davis asks you to leave your phones at the door. Your presence is integral to real connections being built.

Please plan ahead to arrive early. Any attendees arriving 10 minutes after will not be admitted. The flow of our time together is very important and disruptions will be kept to a minimum. Although all are welcome, the attendance for the Black people of Cleveland will be prioritized.

Artist: Kevin Beasley

Kevin Beasley (he/him) lives and works in New York. His practice spans sculpture, photography, sound, and performance, while centering on materials of cultural and personal significance, from raw cotton harvested from his family’s property in Virginia to sounds gathered using contact microphones.

Beasley alters, casts, and molds these diverse materials to form a body of works that acknowledge the complex, shared histories of the broader American experience, steeped in generational memories.

In March 2023, Beasley released A View of a Landscape, a 300-page book and double LP record, conceived as equal elements and designed together. The publication is produced in collaboration with the Renaissance Society and The University of Chicago Press. Recent exhibitions and performances include The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Material Culture, and the Sonic Impulse, a touring exhibition curated by Valerie Cassel Oliver, which traveled from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (2021), to the Contemporary Art Museum of Houston (2021), Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art (2022), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (2022); and Prospect.5, New Orleans: Yesterday we said tomorrow (2021), in which Beasley began a multiyear site-specific project in the Lower Ninth Ward.

Margarita Cabrera
A self-defined social practices artist, Margarita Cabrera’s (she/her) work is often fueled by collaboration from community engagement to get a holistic view of social issues. Materials such as US Border Patrol uniforms and cochineal-dye are used, and transformed, to deliver a multi-tiered conversation on topics such as globalism, populism, and the migrant experience. Often in playful representation, Cabrera’s work, such as embroidered soft-sculpture potted desert plants; mimicking parrots made from found border patrol uniforms; and collaged works on paper made with cochineal dye, implores viewers to confront contentious topics by utilizing materials tied inextricably to the issue. Cabrera was born in Monterrey, Mexico, and moved to El Paso, TX at the age of 10. She received an MFA from Hunter College in New York, NY and is currently an assistant professor at the Arizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts.

Our new season of art includes 3 immersive exhibitions that were designed to be both interactive and engaging.

Finnegan Shannon (they/them) show, 'Don't mind if I do' (July 7, 2023 - January 7, 2024) is currently on view. With Shannon at the helm, Don’t mind if I do is an experiment in more deeply collaborative exhibition-making, demonstrating how even temporary changes in power structures create pathways of access for visitors, artists, and staff.

Finnegan Shannon is a creator of loopholes. Their work is mischievous, methodically chipping away at traditional museum practices. By framing institutional change as artwork, the pace of possibility quickens.

Grounded in a longtime fantasy of the artist’s – an idea of an exhibition setup that would lavishly meet their access needs – this project developed around a conveyor belt. Embraced for its efficiency and mechanized transport of goods (even sushi), this equipment is re-appropriated here as a vehicle for cultivating a more relaxed museum-going experience. The conveyor belt brings artwork to audience members, who are invited to sit on comfortable furniture and engage with a parade of objects through any combination of touch, sight, and sound.

Sharing the work of seven artists who have influenced Shannon’s practice, Don’t mind if I do blurs boundaries between public and private. It puts representations of everyday life that are usually tucked away at home on display. Plastic pill bottles scattered across nightstands share space with a tissue box cover that reminds us of moments of sickness and sadness, with sculptural snapshots of an intimate interspecies bond, with gender-affirming packers that feel most at home tucked inside our clothes. They signify illness, reveal systems of support, and are used in play.

Don’t mind if I do destabilizes rigid ableist and exclusionary museum “best practices” like sparse seating, untouchable objects, dense wall labels, and guards who protect rather than invite engagement.

Our new season of art includes 3 immersive exhibitions that were designed to be both interactive and engaging.

Alexandra Kehayoglou 's (She/Her) landscape rug exhibition is currently on view as part of 'A soft place to land' (July 7, 2023 – January 7, 2024). She produces works combining textiles, sculpture and installation. Kehayoglou’s repertoire includes memories of various native and endangered landscapes that the artist has visited and desires to preserve over time. Her renowned pastizales (grasslands), fields, and shelter tapestries exhibit sublime realities which the viewer can contemplate or utilize. Her work is created from an ancient family tradition of weaving.

The artwork in A soft place to land showcases the influence of place and place making on one’s identity, confronts inter-generational trauma and trauma associated with upbringing, and celebrates materiality as an essential tool in self-discovery.
