The Fifth Element: Charmaine Spencer at the Sculpture Center - Collective Arts Network - CAN Journal

We are grateful to Collective Arts Network Journal and Michael Gill for this generously written article about Charmaine Spencer's upcoming show at The Sculpture Center!

The accomplished sculptor Charmaine Spencer acquired her inclination to use re-cycled and repurposed materials through her childhood of making-do. She spoke about how her life informs her work, as she prepares for a solo show at The Sculpture Center in Cleveland.

Stephen Yusko, a Cleveland-based metal artist, answers a few questions about his studio practice for us: Who was an important mentor to you in your development as an artist?

"I have been very fortunate to have had several people who have been important to my development as a studio artist: Don Harvey was one of my professors who took me under his wing when I was an undergraduate student at Akron University. He has been my mentor and friend ever since. Jim Wallace, former director of the Metal Museum in Memphis, TN. I consider Wally to be my ‘blacksmithing father. Daniel Souto, my great friend and Venezuelan brother, founder and director of La Caravana Escuela. I met Daniel in 1997 while I was teaching a blacksmithing class at Penland. Daniel inspires me to be the best maker I can be and I’m looking forward to co-teaching with him at Penland School in the summer of 2022."

What is one of your favorite pieces of advice you like to give younger artists?

"Go to your studio and create. This will lead you to create other things. And don’t half-ass anything."

TSC Artist Lauren Kalman writes about the making of her body of work, 'Flourish', on exhibit RIGHT NOW at :

"Flourish is comprised of wearable objects and videos. In 2016 I used historic pressing dies for costume jewelry to produce approximately 800 copper flourishes while in residence at the Jakob Bengel Foundation, a German jewelry factory established in 1873. In my studio back home I produced and additional 300 mirrored copies and worked with my assistant to cut and polish all of the part. These parts were then assembled into the Flourish works over life casting of my face."
Lauren's work is on exhibit now through Dec. 17th alongside
