OPEN Center for the Arts

Share, inspire, and promote different artistic expressions of emerging and aspiring artists Artists will continue to roam the halls cultivating their craft.

Among the sounds of dishes and drums in the corners of Mexican restaurants, a group of young artists gathered to talk about art and future exhibits. These artists dreamed about having their own place where art spilled over into the community and where artists could help one another grow. In 2004, expresiones-artisticas became the epicenter that grew out of those late-night bashes where the grassro

ots art collective shared hopes and dreams. In 2008, the dream was put on hold after a fire took down the building that housed the group of artists. Today, a new group of artists, entrepreneurs, educators and community leaders have gathered to rebuild the dream. OPEN center for the arts is opening its doors keeping the same original philosophy that art is a fundamental force in culture and it must be nurtured and shared.

Apart from the many artists, community members, and organizations that make what we do possible, OPEN would like to extend our gratitude to The Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities, DCASE, and the Terra Foundation for their collaboration. Their support has been instrumental in enabling our ability to provide youth with creative opportunities that connect them with the community, such as the Cariño Urban Film Crew's submission for the Cariño Festival de Cine this November. Both the Cariño Urban Film Crew and the Cariño Festival de Cine are part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide initiative launched by the Terra Foundation for American Art that celebrates the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities.

On July 20th, 2024, the LAWNDALE Peace Party at Douglass Park brought together North and South Lawndale to promote peace, love, and unity. Hosted by the MSRN Peace Committee and powered by Latinos Progresando, the event featured music, food, and art for families and friends.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Marshall Square Resource Network (MSRN), the North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC), and all the volunteers who made this event a success. Special thanks to our Cariño Urban Film Crew who came out to support the Peace Party, the crew was there as part of Art Design Chicago, a citywide collaboration initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art that highlights the city’s artistic heritage and creative communities.

We look forward to the Marshall Square Community Summit every year, with good reason! We had such an amazing time at the 2024 summit connecting with community, running into past collaboratos, learning from the different sessions, and, of course, making art with you!

OPEN's Team came out in full force, with Luis Crespo leading a Peace Poster workshop, with support from Haman Cross III & Alma Dominguez. Our session had some beautiful reflections on peace in the community, and participants really challenged themselves to explore their artistry without barriers. Thank you to everyone who created with us!

This weekend the OPEN Team had such a memorable time at The Goodman Theatre's Alice Center as part of their ACTivation. Thank you to the Goodman Theatre and their entire team for the warm welcome and diving in with us! Masks came to life with Luis Crespo and Alma Dominguez, and, along with the Lincoln Park Zoo Team, Abi Fernandez and Alejandro Rosado made Polar Bear inspired art! Thank you for coming out and getting creative with us!

📣Submissions are open for Cariño Festival de Cine 2024! 🎬

Are you aged 13 to 26 with a short film under 15 minutes? The Cariño Festival de Cine 2024 wants to see YOUR work! Whether you're sitting on a short film, in the midst of creating, or just starting to brainstorm, remember to submit to Cariño by September 30th, 2024 to be considered for this year's festival.

Ten exceptional films will be selected to grace the screen and six awards of $300 will be presented.

Step into the enigmatic world of 'Common Wealth,' World Premiere play produced by OPEN Center for the Arts written and directed by Luis Crespo. Set in a transformed Chicago shaped by a solar storm and pandemic, the play follows Taino's journey through desolate streets and makeshift havens in search of family. As the characters navigate a city in chaos, the play unfolds with moments of comedy and drama, exploring resilience, hope, and the pursuit of what truly matters. Performances run from April 11th to 15th and 18th to 21st 2024, featuring evening shows at 7 pm and Sunday matinees at 4:30 pm.
