Hi friends! You may have noticed increased activity around the beautiful May-Stringer this morning. We received a donation that was potentially hazardous (unbeknownst to the donor!) The curator notified the proper authorities to handle the situation.

We’re closing today as a precaution. Thank you for understanding!

Today we celebrate 250 years of our nation’s history, resilience, and the generations who have shaped the story of the United States.

In observance of Independence Day, the May-Stringer House, 1885 Train Depot Museum, and Countryman One-Room Schoolhouse will be closed on July 4.

We hope you enjoy a safe and meaningful holiday with family and friends. We’ll see you when we reopen as we continue preserving and sharing Hernando County’s history. We look forward to welcoming you back next week with normal operating hours.

❤️🤍💙 Happy Independence Day! 🇺🇸

This Victorian mansion is part heritage museum, part architectural oddity, and part ghost story.

We are incredibly honored to have been recognized in the 2026 Hernando Sun Readers' Choice Awards!

🏆 Gold Winner – Museum/Gallery (May-Stringer House)
🥈 Silver Winner – Museum/Gallery (Brooksville Train Depot)

These awards are especially meaningful because they are decided by our community. Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote, visit our museums, attend our events, volunteer, donate, and support local history throughout the year. Your encouragement helps us continue preserving and sharing Hernando County’s stories for future generations.

We would also like to congratulate our friends at Chinsegut Hill on being named Gold Winner in the Historical Site category! We are proud to stand alongside so many organizations working to preserve and celebrate our community’s heritage.
