HERE'S TO MORE DAYS OF EXPLORATION

Thank you to all of those who came out to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Florida Mermaid Trail this past Saturday. Despite a city-wide power outage we had a pretty wonderful day. We loved seeing children and their families reading the clues and trying to find all of the hidden mermaids in downtown Brooksville. The best part was seeing droves of people walking the city and realizing the beauty that lies here. Once the power came back, you not only browsed our unique shops, but you also packed our downtown restaurants. All that walking does build up an appetite ;)

Special thanks to the nearly 40 volunteers who helped make The Florida Mermaid Trail launch a success!

The Florida Mermaid Trail is a permanent fixture in downtown Brooksville. You can take the routes from sunrise to sunset. Maps will be available at our brand new welcome center at the first stop 205 E. Fort Dade Avenue, as well as the library, and businesses along the route. Your best bet - download the interactive map! Remember to tag your photos with the #flmermaidtrail hashtag so we can follow you on your adventures in our historic downtown Brooksville!

DOWNLOAD THE DISTRX APP!

As a mobile user, as you enter the downtown Brooksville district, you will receive a welcome greeting, and the app opens to reveal everything you as a visitor wants to know about your community: Brooksville Main Street events, the Florida Mermaid Trail Tour, parking locations, local attractions, map, and a business directory by category.

There is no cost to join or for local businesses to participate in claiming their downtown business.

Best of all, when you travel to other Main Street communities, the same mobile app transforms to become the app for that community!

If you are going to eat out on Thursday night, think about going to Rookies Sports Bar, where the burgers are great and the crowd has a good time with Halloween characters roaming about. It's a fundraiser for the Museum Haunted House event (We have to buy a LOT of fake blood and fog juice!) You don't need a ticket. Just go and have dinner. Thanks.

Over Labor Day weekend someone took four 16 inch cement paving bricks from in front of the Train Depot Museum. These paving bricks were purchased and placed by a volunteer at her own expense. Now they are gone. It is unbelievable what people will steal.

Billy the Kid to visit the 1885 Train Depot Museum in Brooksville Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear the story of William H. Cox II, “BILLY THE KID.” He recounts his adventure of 30 years ago when he experienced a life-changing event that found him literally living in the footsteps of the legendary figure of the wild wild West, William H. Bonney, known infamously as “Billy the Kid.” Billy has written an autobiography about his life and adventures entitled: “The Adventures & Times of William H. Cox II, Billy the Kid.” Thirty years ago, Billy took a road trip to Roswell, New Mexico to learn about the land and history of that place after seeing the movie “Young Guns.” Little did he know he was headed for an experience that would change his personal history and had everybody in the SouthWest saying that New Mexico’s notorious son was back. As Billy recounts, he was twenty two years old and full of energy. Arriving in Roswell, New Mexico, he stepped off the bus, not knowing where to go. He just went with the direction of the wind. It led him to the Roswell Museum. As he walked into the museum, the historian immediately approached him and said he looked just like “Billy the Kid.” “What is your name?” asked the historian. “Billy,” he replied. The museum historian’s mouth dropped! “We need to get you to Lincoln,” he said, which was about sixty miles from Roswell. So began his adventure as “Billy the Kid” in Lincoln, New Mexico. Billy the Kid had returned in the person of William H. Cox II, who bore an uncanny likeness to the Kid. Let the Kid tell you the rest of the story in person where he will make his book available and answer questions. You will learn not just about Billy the Kid, you will learn that life is full of adventures and you don’t have to be ordinary, you can be original! EVENT TIME: SATURDAY, JULY 28 @ 7P.M. EVENT LOCATION: 1885 TRAIN DEPOT MUSEUM 70 Russell Street Brooksville, FL 34601 EVENT COST: $10 RSVP 352-799-4766 (20 seats available)
