The Keys to Christmas Winner: Day Seven

Congratulations to Hadley Brightman from Hudson, FL who tracked the clues that led to the 1885 Train Depot Museum! This was the first train station in Brooksville. The rooms are filled with exhibits depicting early Florida, Railroad, and Hernando County history. As part of the Rails to Trails program, the old railroad track bed is now the Good Neighbor Trailhead.

The Train Depot Museum is a repository with census records, the Brooksville city directories dating back to the 1950’s and much more. If you are looking for family information from long ago, it might be at the Depot. It also houses model trains and railroad memorabilia.

It is owned and managed by the Hernando Historical Museum Assoc., a non-profit, all-volunteer organization.

The Keys to Christmas Winner: Day Five

Congratulations to Ryan ODell and Jocelyn Tilton of Spring Hill, FL! They located today's hidden key at the Historic May-Stringer House Museum located at 601 Museum Court in downtown Brooksville. The fourteen room, four story house has seven gables and gingerbread trim. In some rooms the ceiling is 10 feet tall. The Museum association has created exhibit rooms with a Victorian look, and there are rooms devoted to specific themes: A Military Room, an 1880s doctor’s office and a 1900s communication room. The Museum is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from Noon to 3:00pm or by reservation. Contact them directly for more information: 352-799-0129.

The May-Stringer House has also been noted to be one of the most haunted places in Florida. Check out The Brooksville PIT or visit May-Stringer Ghost Tours to experience for yourself.

Their holiday lights will be lit beginning on December 4th and will be on every evening through New Years Eve. Don't forget to stop by the gift shop to see some wonderful finds to adorn your home, or give as gifts to loved ones.

The cedar chest is still available for a special Hernando County resident. Call today!

The May-Stringer Gift Shop has a unique, hand crafted, red cedar chest available for sale. The cedar came from a tree on Ft. Dade here in Brooksville. It is approximately 48"x 20'x 20" in size and has a sliding tray and the lid is coopered (11-12 pieces of wood!) If you have a special occasion coming up such as a graduation, wedding or anniversary, then this beautiful chest would make the ideal, one of a kind, gift. Was $1,500, now $999. Call Vicki at 727-458-3335 to make the purchase.

This beautiful piece is still available! Give us a call to see it in person.

Available in the May-Stringer gift shop.

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of one of Brooksville's most respected craftsmen the May-Stringer Gift Shop is able to offer both a beautiful Cedar Hope Chest and a solid Cherry Jewelry Box for sale at this time. Both pieces are unique, one of a kind treasures that will make wonderful gifts to be handed down through generations. The pictures, though beautiful, do not do them justice and should be seen by anyone who is interested in the kind of workmanship that very few still do.
The Hope Chest is priced at $1800 and the Jewelry Box, $275. Again, these are both one of a kind pieces.
Pay a visit to the May-Stringer, come to the gift shop and see for yourself. We are supported by donations alone as are the other buildings that are part of the Hernando Historical Museum Assoc.

I am researching my family tree. My GGG Grandfather was Major Isaac Garrison/Garrason. I have been led to believe that his tombstone was moved from the Bayport Cemetery along with some others to one of the museums in Brooksville. The photo of the tombstone is inscribed, " Erected to the memory of Maj. Isaac Garrason, died Jan 10 1865, age 70". If you know anything about his tombstone's whereabouts or the location of any other Garrison graves in the area, I would appreciate the help to locate them. I am also trying to find my GG grandfather, Joseph Nathan Garrison, born abt 1824 and his wife, Mary Sutton Garrison, born in 1826. Thanks!
Come on out to the Sand Hill Scout Reservation this weekend. It is always fun and you are bound to learn more about the history of Civil War period.
