With a heavy heart, I want to wish Dana and her family our deepest condolences on the passing of her Mother and our very special friend and awesome volunteer Cherry Fleischer. Friday's at the One Room Schoolhouse will not be the same without her. I will cherish all of her stories about life in Kentucky and her many escapades with her late husband Dave.
Cherry you will be missed! God bless your family and Godspeed.

We would like to thank West Pasco Christian Home School for visiting with us on Friday, September 30, 2016 accompanied by their teacher Laura Turner. . We were happy that the children and their docents Mary and Cherry had the opportunity to enjoy our newest exhibit - The Life and Culture of Florida's Native Indians. In fact, the children were able to learn a technique called leaf printing.
The children also got to see what is was like in a One Room schoolhouse in 1892 . They learned what the three R's were. Do you know? You too can experience all that when you come to our Countryman Family One Room Schoolhouse Museum. If you would love to book a tour please call 352-515-3054 thank you.

In the Hernando sun, Mary Sheldon, President of the Hernando Historical Museum Association , wrote an article about Toys of the 1800's. The Countryman Family One-room Schoolhouse currently hosts a large display of these old toys. Some of these toys include jump ropes, Marbles, Jumping jacks, Jacob's Ladder , Pick up Sticks and a Whammy Diddle. Huh you say, I guess you will have to come find out! As you can seed below Checkers were made from corncobs. Dried cobs were sliced into about half-inch sections. Then half were painted red and half were painted black. Placed on a checkered wooden board, the game began. Also shown Dolls were fashioned from cornhusks. Others were made from leftover cloth pieces and were called rag dolls. Even store-bought dolls were outfitted with beautiful handstitched clothes. The Countryman One Room Schoolhouse has a collection of toys and games from years gone by. The School Children & Adults alike are invited to try these games. Come see us soon when we reopen due to Covid 19. If you would like to book a reservation, please call 352-515-3054.
