Old North Church & Historic Site

Old North Church & Historic Site The Old North Foundation interprets and preserves the history of the Old North Church, made famous by Longfellow's poem "Paul Revere's Ride."
Today the Old North Foundation, a secular, not-for-profit organization, is devoted to the preservation of Old North and to creating educational and interpretive programs for students and visitors. The Foundation has embarked on a master planning process to restore the church and transform the entire campus into an interactive learning environment.

The enduring fame of the Old North began on the evening of April 18, 1775, when the church sexton, Robert Newman, climbed the steeple and held high two lanterns as a signal from Paul Revere that the British were marching to Lexington and Concord by sea and not by land. This fateful event ignited the American Revolution.

Mission: The Old North Foundation was established in 1991 as a secular, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Its mission is to: • Guide and support the utilization and preservation of the Old North, its buildings, and it's campus; • Foster educational and interpretative programs for students and visitors who experience the Old North; and • Engage the public in Old North's history and its role in inspiring liberty and freedom.

Spotted this week: A halo around our steeple and we can't help but think of the final refrain of "America the Beautiful" and all its meaning this weekend.

O beautiful for patriot dream, that sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears
America, America, God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea.

10 Facts About the Battle of Bunker Hill

Saluting our neighbors at the Boston National Historical Park at Bunker Hill today on the 244th Anniversary of the major battle fought in Charlestown #OTD in history.

Though the colonies were defeated in the Battle of Bunker Hill, American forces performed so impressively and inflicted so many casualties on their powerful opponent that most rebels took it as a moral victory.

We love having neighbors like the Eliot K-8 Innovation School and we were thrilled to host the 8th-grade class as their service site this year! We had a great day, honoring preservation as well as exploring issues of identity, discrimination, power, and place by examining primary source materials in Old North archives through our Sacred Seats education program, which dives into the history of our pews and the 18th-century congregation. Looking forward to seeing them all again next week for their graduation ceremony! #LivingHistory
