Last night, as part of a tradition dating back to 1638, the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company elected its 2nd Lieutenant and Sergeants of Infantry and Artillery for the coming 2022 - 2023 command year.

Yesterday a reenactment of the First Muster of 1636 took place in Salem, Massachusetts. The event honors the National Guard's 385 years of service to the Commonwealth and the Nation.

Governor Charlie Baker gave a moving speech about the Guard's service means to the Commonwealth and how much it has meant to him during his time in office.

As part of honoring the best of our history and traditions, awards recognizing service were given to retiring members of the Guard as well as to members of Salem's Second Corps of Cadets (our host and fellow Centennial Legion member) as well as Arthur Conrad of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company.

The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company regrettably reports with sadness that today we laid to rest our friend, fellow Ancient, and the Company's 312th Captain Commanding, Major John F. Welch, PC.

Major Welch proudly served both his nation and the Commonwealth as a member of the United States Army, which included overseas tours from Vietnam through Kuwait, as well as several positions within the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company culminating with his service as its 312th Captain Commanding (2020-2021).

On 21 February 2022 the AHAC celebrated its 137th luncheon honoring the office of the presidency of the United States. The tradition predates "Presidents Day" as it was held in commemoration of the Company's role as
as Honorary Escort to the President of the United States, Chester A. Arthur, on the occasion of the dedication of the Washington Monument, Washington, D.C., on 21 February 1885.

President Arthur was a member of the A&HAC, having been enrolled on
12 October 1882.

The event was hosted by our 313th Captain Commanding, Robert A. Imlach, Jr., at the AHAC Headquarters, Armory, and Museum and the keynote speaker was US Navy Commander Billie Farrell the current and 1st female commanding officer of the USS Constitution. Cmdr Farrell participated in pre and post luncheon activities and gave an excellent speech on leadership and her service in the US Navy.

Happy 95th birthday to our very own Lt Col Enoch "Woody" Woodhouse, II, fellow Ancient, Tuskegee Airman, and ambassador of goodwill to all!

Woody is at the American Heritage Museum in Stow. MA. in front of Boeing PT-17 Stearman. One of only two remaining Stearman aircraft known to have been flown by Tuskegee Airmen during WWII.

Both Woody and the Stearman are still going strong!

First Flag ceremonies in Somerville, MA on January 1st with the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company and members of the Centennial Legion, along with His Magisty's 10th Regiment of Foot, commemorating the 1st national flag, the "Great Union" flag first raised by General George Washington on January 1, 1776 at the most visible point of the American fortifications overlooking British-occupied Boston.

People scurried about, with packages large and small

Within its historic armory, the Curator was busy polishing the Company's collection
In anticipation of Santa's annual military inspection

The toys gathered by the Sergeants from the donations of generous Ancients
Would soon be in the hands of little children (the wait was trying their patience)

While the Captain Commanding and his Staff were preparing for the New Year
A few took a moment to raise a cup of good cheer.

Under Captain Commanding Robert A. Imlach, Jr., a large contingent from the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company marched in the 20 NOV 2021 Plymouth thanksgiving parade.

It was a cold and crisp autumn day for "America's Homecoming Parade" in Plymouth, MA but the crowd of tens of thousands of spectators enthusiastically cheered along the entire parade route. The route was reversed this year, no doubt to catch everyone's "good side" for the caneras as it was covered live by Boston's Channel 5.

The various units who participated on that chilly morning were warmed by the enthusiasm of the tens of thousands in attendance. A wonderful time was had by all, both old and young alike.

Today is Remembrance Day.

Remembrance Sunday is a day to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts. It is held on the second Sunday in November (the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of hostilities in World War I in 1918).

Today the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, led Captain Commanding Robert A. Imlach, Jr., provided the Color Guard and served as Governor Charlie Baker's Honor Guard for this year's Veterans Day ceremonies.

The ceremony honoring the Commonwealth's Veterans was held in Faneuil Hall and one of our own, Lt Col Enoch "Woody" Woodhouse, Tuskegee Airman, received a Community Engagement Award from the Commonwealth's Department of Veterans Affairs.

Awards were presented during a catered lunch to the top shooters in each classification and special awards of appreciation were presented by Captain Commanding Robert A. Imlach to BG Frank LaBolita and Col. Larry Willwerth as well as the Braintree Rifle and Pistol Club for their dedication and long service to the AHAC Fall Shoot.

I understand that there should not be a public gathering for a reading of the Declaration tomorrow from the Old State House. But does this mean this would be the first time since 1777 that is is skipped? Perhaps someone could recite the Declaration from the balcony to an empty street and stream the reading over the internet.

In Dec 1891 , P S GILMORE decided that that to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America in 1492 he would hold the first open air celebration of the New Year on January 1 in front of City Hall . That tradition continues to this day and was started by GILMORE . 100 years later City Hall , New York issued a proclamation to honour the great Irishman from Galway .......... Happy New Year to all .

I am very proud of my Ancestors.
Grand Army of the Republic {cont. }- And so on in April 6th 1866 , the organisation GAR was founded .GAR Posts began in States throughout the UNION . In Massachusetts a listed 104 posts began , while in Kentucky another 150 prospered . In Kansas 500 were activated and in New York over 672 Posts were active through the State . P S Gilmore and all his bands were active for all occasions of remembrance and commemoration of both the hard fought divisive war but also the memory of the many souls lost in battle . Interestingly in the thousands of Posts listed nationwide there had been none publicized as remembering those musicians who had fought and performed for the UNION and this didn't escape Gilmore's attention , so in New York he became the founder and First Commander of MUSICIANS POST 452 . The Posts last address was Old Homestead, 3rd Ave. and 91st St.; 210-214 E. 86th St. They were organised {or received Members initially } on March 13th 1884 . And in 1892 the GAR HQ in Washington DC sanctioned the name change on his death from Musicians Post 452 to honor the Post's founder and first Commander, Patrick S.Gilmore, in September 1892. The Post surrendered its charter in 1910-1911 with 12 members still on the roll.
I will ask anyone who may have have information that this is not the only Musicians Post in the GAR but I cannot find any other presently - This GAR POST was the only specific MUSICIANS POST in the GAR among the many thousands of POSTS in the that organisation dedicated to the memory of the dulcet sounds of these men and the duty for which they were dedicated to fulfill Here is the cover of the P S Gilmore Post 452.

Wonderful to see the Post re P S Gilmore . He was the single most important Bandmaster in 19th Century America in during the Civil War and till his death in 1892 . But in 1865 he was "recruited" to the Ancient and Honorable membership. and for years his band not only provided the annual entertainment but led the Parade on the 250th Anniversary of the AHA with 36 piece Band tp the State House . That day the band were wearing uniforms presented by Boston Merchants especially for the occasion. It is interesting to review the Finance Committee of the AHA that signed each of the Gilmore Band Invoices and approved them for payment . Thank you .
