Start your Sunday off at the Garden! Today, at 10:00 am, Art Talk with BAMPFA senior curator Anthony Graham, who co-curated
"Maren Hassinger: Living Moving Growing," now on view at the Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive. The Garden supplied branch material for multiple sculptures that are on view in the galleries at BAMPFA, and collaborated in the building of the sculpture "Monument (Pyramid)" on the Garden’s Oak Knoll.

After the talk visit her sculpture, wander the Garden and take in the spectacular bay views!

Don't miss the BAMPFA/Garden Talk!

Maren Hassinger: Living Moving Growing with Anthony Graham // Sunday, October 4, 10:00–11:00 am.

"Maren Hassinger: Living Moving Growing," now on view at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, is the most significant retrospective of the artist to date. Hear from exhibition co-curator Anthony Graham about Hassinger’s work across sculpture, performance, video, and installation from the early 1970s to today. Throughout her career, Hassinger has addressed social and cultural issues through an awareness of interconnectedness, ephemerality, and the relationships between humans and the natural world.

The Garden supplied branch material for multiple sculptures that are on view in the galleries at BAMPFA, and collaborated in the building of the sculpture "Monument (Pyramid)" on the Garden’s Oak Knoll. The exhibition runs through November 29, 2026.

Anthony Graham is Senior Curator at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. Other recent projects include Object Oriented: Abstraction and Design in the BAMPFA Collection as well as solo exhibitions with artists Zeinab Saleh, Tanya Aguiñiga, and Young Joon Kwak.

An irresistible treat for the hummingbirds! Puya micrantha is currently in full bloom in the Deserts of the Americas collection, bed 155. Accessioned into the Garden in 1956, it produces dramatic, towering flower stalks packed with rich nectar that pollinators simply can't resist. Keep your eyes peeled, and your camera ready, for a flutter of wings.

Chinese meadow-rue (Thalictrum delavayi) is blooming in the Asian area (beds 235 and 236). It looks like a soft, lilac cloud hovering over the foliage. Native to China, this herbaceous perennial features tall, wiry stems topped with hundreds of delicate, fairy-like blossoms and contrasting yellow stamens that seem to float in the air. Check it out soon!

Bloom alert: Luculia yunnanensis in the Asian Area, bed 235. This evergreen shrub is native to China. Check it out on your next visit to the Garden!

Summer isn't over yet, but hopefully we've left behind the extreme heat! Visit this weekend and check out this spectacular Ginger lily (Hedychium greenii) in the Asian area, bed 224. Have you seen the Mexican cycad bed? In the fall of 2023, we planted out this bed adjacent to Julia Morgan Hall. Three years in, we are excited to share the progress of these endangered species!

The bed features all three Mexican cycad genera (species that share similar characteristics): Ceratozamia, Dioon, and Zamia. The past three years have brought subtle transformations to these extraordinary plants. Cycads are an ancient group of gymnosperms which are cone-bearing seed plants with palm-like leaves and thick, soft stems of storage tissue that mostly lack true wood. Older than flowering plants, they even pre-date the dinosaurs.

Many of these specimens lived in pots for decades as part of our research collection, tucked away from public view. Placed in a specialized soil mix beneath the sweeping canopy of a large Mexican oak (Quercus rugosa), they are finally taking root and maturing into magnificent specimens. Seeing these plants in person lets you truly appreciate how unique they are!

The Garden's cycad collection is a nationally accredited plant collection, recognized by American Public Gardens Association.
