What our children read matters. That is why as homeschool parents we invest time and resources into providing quality curriculum that will bolster their beliefs as well as their knowledge base. But I have a simple question for you to consider: What's on YOUR reading list? In the midst of the busy-ness of life, don't neglect your own personal growth. God and His Word, the Bible, are our first and most important source of knowledge, wisdom, and strength, but your secondary choices matter as well. What you are reading today is making you what you will be tomorrow. Choose wisely.

Psalm 90:12
So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

The older my children get (young adults) and the older I get (not-so-young adult) the more I see the crying need for wisdom, not only for myself but for my children. True wisdom comes only from the one true God of heaven. We can teach our children to be wise, but only God can give genuine wisdom. Encourage your children to seek after wisdom by viewing everything through the lens of God and His Word and by asking Him for wisdom daily! We call this having a Biblical worldview. If you are still teaching your children academic subjects, make sure your curriculum provides that same Biblical worldview in each subject area. Accumulation of knowledge that is not built on true wisdom is an empty pursuit that leads to skewed thinking.

May we each "apply" (give special attention to; give effort to) our heart unto wisdom so that the sum of our days equals a life well-lived with eternity's values in view.

Time to gear up for another school year! In the midst of a rapidly-changing world, it's imperative to know the God Who never changes! Does your curriculum teach your children to trust the one true living God? If not, it may be time to reset your focus; now's a good time to start!

Richmond, VA field trip idea:
Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in the Richmond, VA area. They have recently opened the butterfly garden. This is a Blue Morpho butterfly, probably a female, possibly laying eggs. The second picture (not mine) shows the beautiful blue appearance of the wings, which can be up to 8 inches across, when they are opened. Fun fact: the wings are not actually blue, but due to light refraction off of tiny scales, they appear blue to the human eye. What a beautiful expression of the limitless creativity of the Creator God! I'm thinking this would make a wonderful science field trip for those living near or visiting the Richmond area this summer. I have not personally watched all of these and therefore cannot unreservedly recommend them, but I share this to give you some ideas of options you might consider watching and/or showing to your children. (It's always the parent's job to be the parent, which includes deciding what is and is not appropriate, God-honoring viewing material for your family.)
