Our gardens at the Atlanta History Center support a wide range of urban wildlife. The mature tree canopy and our ecosystem-oriented, biodiverse gardens encourage multiple kinds of predatory birds, including owls, to reside on campus. Barred owls are highly adaptable and are a common resident of urban forests in eastern North America. Also called the “eight-hooter owl”, one of their common, distinctive calls has two sets of four hoots with a downward pitch at the end.

Wishing a very happy birthday to the legendary Shirley Franklin! 🎂✨

Shirley has broken barriers as Atlanta’s first woman Mayor and the first Black woman to lead a major Southern city. Since 1978, she’s made a lasting impact through her dedication to public service – from guiding city projects like housing and airports to making history as the nation’s first female Chief Administrative Officer! Her work for the Olympics took Atlanta to new heights, building partnerships and making the city shine.

Here’s to celebrating her incredible legacy and all the doors she’s opened!

Happy Earth Day! 🌎 Every little action counts, and our Gardens team is passionate about making Atlanta History Center more eco-friendly and biodiverse, and their hard work is blooming everywhere.

Check out the cozy outdoor seating between Veterans Park and the side entrance; it's made from a fallen tree and is perfect for a lunch break! You'll also see our Habitat Hedge at its entrance, thoughtfully crafted from reclaimed wood to support local wildlife.

We're also proud to:

🦎 rehabilitate salamanders
☕ 🍲 compost kitchen scraps from BRASH and Souper Jenny in just 6 months
🍁 collect autumn leaves for mulch
🌱 use holistic gardening to avoid pesticides
🔋 run electric equipment
🚰 conserve water with moisture sensors and our own well

Caring for the planet is an ongoing journey. We're excited to share it with you, especially on Earth Day, but all year long! 🌱
