Meet the legendary Atlantic Steel Company mascots: Charley's Goat, Mr. Ingot, and Safety Sadie! These mascots helped promote safety at Atlantic Steel. Sadie and Mr. Ingot photos are from around the 1940s-1960s, although Charley's goat photo is undated.

We're excited to have processed these treasures for the Kenan Research Center, helping keep their stories and our industrial history alive for everyone to enjoy! This collection is available to be requested for research.

All images are part of the Atlantic Steel Company visual arts materials fully processed and soon to be digitized into our collections in Kenan Research Center.

Today, we reflect on the incredible legacy of the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) in Muscogee (Creek) culture. From naming the autumn months after the chestnut to cultivating thriving groves, the Muscogee people embraced the oto as a cornerstone of their land, language, and daily life. The chestnut provided vital food, medicine, and materials, demonstrating deep-rooted resourcefulness and innovation.

Despite the devastation of forced removal during the Trail of Tears, the Muscogee’s resilience and adaptation continue to inspire.

Engage with these powerful stories at our upcoming exhibition, "Exile from Georgia: The Cherokee and Muscogee Trails of Tears", opening November 19th.

Start your evening at Atlanta History Center on Wednesday, October 7 at 7pm with an inspiring Aiken Lecture featuring Bobby J. Smith II and Oakland Cemetery’s own Abra Lee. Dive into the fascinating world of Black agricultural history, where Bobby J. Smith II shines a light on the remarkable impact of the NFA and its powerful influence on education and racial justice.

Then, keep the adventure going with the 20th annual Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours at Historic Oakland Cemetery, happening October 15–18 & 22–25. Take a walk through Atlanta’s past as costumed storytellers bring the city’s unforgettable characters to life.
