On June 3, 1962, one hundred and six of Atlanta’s most committed arts patrons perished when their plane crashed during takeoff at Orly Field. They were returning home from a three-week cultural excursion to France. In the wake of this terrible loss, Atlanta came together to honor the victims. Through a then anonymous gift from Coca-Cola magnate Robert W. Woodruff, the Arts Center was established as a memorial to the lives lost at Orly. The French government presented a gift of Rodin’s “The Shade” in memory of the Orly victims. Today the sculpture stands outside the High’s Stent Family Wing.

Happy Birthday to Ellsworth Kelly, born on this day in 1923! 🎂

Kelly continued his exploration of color, shape, and space in Green Curve. This work exemplifies his interest in reductionist form and pure color. It also adheres to a formula he applied to other works in which a graceful, sweeping curve ends suddenly at a blunt and truncated end.

Find this work in our Modern and Contemporary galleries!

Was this a playground? 🛝🤔

The forms in A World I Did Not Make echo Noguchi’s playground designs and may reflect an early concept for a Hiroshima playground developed with architect Kenzō Tange. Created during Noguchi’s time working with potter Rosanjin Kitaōji, the ceramic offers a glimpse into this envisioned play space, which was ultimately never built.

Stay tuned for more deep cuts from Isamu Noguchi: “I am not a designer”, now open at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta now through August 2.

Studies suggest that engaging with art can improve mental and physical health, strengthen social connection, and increase longevity for older adults.

At the High, we are putting this research into practice through programs like:
➡️ Studio Art Classes led by professional teaching artists
➡️ Musing Together, a monthly program for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia and their care partners
➡️ Art After Loss, a four-week art conversation group for adults navigating grief

Nadine Robinson’s “Coronation Theme: Organon” is back on view in our galleries.

Nadine Robinson’s large-scale installations often rely on sound to explain complex narratives that address historic moments. For “Coronation Theme,” Robinson was inspired by the 1963 Project C (Confrontation) demonstration in Birmingham, Alabama, when nearly 1,000 children and young adults were fire-hosed by police for protesting segregation with a sit-in. The thirty loudspeaker cabinets issue a chorus of sounds: organ music, sermons, songs, prayers, and protests. The architectural arrangement of the speakers recalls a large pipe organ and is loosely based on the façade of Atlanta’s historic Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Find this work on the skyway level of the museum’s Wieland Pavilion.

This Saturday | Join us for a special series of activations led by contemporary artist Craig Colorusso. Colorusso (b. 1970, Mount Vernon, NY) uses installations, sound sculptures, and bowed guitar performances to blur the boundaries between art, environment, and experience.

Activations:
➡️ Sun Boxes: Be greeted at the museum by these solar-powered sculptures that each play a unique guitar note when sunlight is present.
➡️ AWASH: Join in on the fun by connecting your phone as a digital instrument. Create a chorus of sounds with museum guests as you walk throughout our galleries.
➡️ Army of Chainsaws for Brian Kelly: Witness this long-form performance piece inspired by a 2018 micro-storm, where winds can reach up to 100 mph, that tore through the artist's hometown. Colorusso will also perform a second piece titled "The Kevin Elston".
➡️ INSTALL: Learn more about Colorusso with this short film that explores his practice.

The Sunday paper 100 years ago today! 📰

On this day in 1926, the Atlanta Constitution announced that Harriet "Hattie" Harwell Wilson High donated her residence on Peachtree Street to the Atlanta Art Association to found an art school and art museum.

The article states "Thus, through this magnificent gift by one of Atlanta's leading women citizens, the hopes and dreams of more than 25 years come true…"

Six months later, the High Museum of Art opened. This October, we will celebrate our centennial anniversary, 100 years of the High Museum of Art.
