This Saturday, October 17, I'll be sharing local ghost lore aboard one of the vintage trains operated by the Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum. The 6pm adult ride is sold out, but there are STILL SEATS AVAILABLE FOR THE CHILDREN'S RIDE at 2pm. Depart from the station in Adams, journey through the historic Hoosac Valley up to North Adams, step off the train into pumpkin a patch where kids can hand-pick their favorite pumpkin to take home, then enjoy the scenic rail-ride back to Adams. There is one heritage railroad museum in Berkshire County, and its best exhibit is the one you ride. Fall Foliage season opens this Saturday, and the first hand-punched ticket of the year is waiting for you in Adams.

You'll ride the Speedliner, B&O 1960: one of only two Budd Rail Diesel Cars built in 1956 for the Baltimore and Ohio's Daylight Speedliner between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. It was built to cruise at 83 miles an hour. With us it takes its time at about 15, which is the right speed for an October afternoon in the Hoosac Valley.

Along the way you'll hear the stories of the line. Chartered in 1846 as the Pittsfield and North Adams Railroad. The H.W. Clark Biscuit Company, which once sent thousands of cookies a day down to the railcars alongside it, with the rails still visible in the grass. The 1888 station at Renfrew. The 1899 Adams depot, which is a pub now.

Saturdays and Sundays, September 19 through October 11, plus Columbus Day Monday, October 12. Departures at 11:00 AM, 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM.

On September 11, 2001, ordinary people got up and went to work. Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, rail and transit crews, and countless volunteers spent that day and the long months after doing whatever needed doing, for no reason other than that it needed doing.

As an all-volunteer organization, we hold a deep respect for people who show up for their communities. Today we remember the ones who showed up that morning and did not come home.

One train. One afternoon. One chance this year. 🗳️

The Democracy Limited Train departs this Sunday, September 13 at 1:30 PM, and it runs once.

Ride our vintage railcar while Susan B. Anthony recounts the illegal vote that sent her to trial, and Lucy Burns tells the story of the "night of terror" behind bars. Refreshments and a treat from the Suffrage Cookbook are waiting when you step back onto the platform.

A century and a half later, it still lands. Bring someone who should hear it.

Seats are limited and this is the only run of the year.

Some holidays you earn. 🛤️

Labor Day was born in 1894 out of a railroad strike, and every mile of track in this country was laid by hand before it was ever ridden for fun.

To the crews who built it, and the volunteers who keep it running, thank you.
