A DAY OF FIRSTS - B&O 1960 HITS THE RAILS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIRTY YEARS
It’s been a long time since B&O 1960 turned a wheel under its own power, even longer since it’s been together with another RDC (rail diesel car). Built in 1956 by the Budd Company for the Baltimore & Ohio’s “Daylight Speedliner”, it is truly unique, with a full kitchen, dining area and long distance seating, along with baggage section. Originally assigned to operate between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, only two of these cars were ever built. Miraculously, both still survive, with the 1961 on static display at the B&O Museum.

This weekend, for the first time in BSRM’s history, two RDCS, B&O 1960 and New Haven 41, were tested in tandem on the organization’s Hoosac Valley Train Ride, located in Adams, Massachusetts. Over the last six years, Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum has grown both its fleet and knowledge of these unique cars, most recently partnering with the Budd RDC Foundation to add three more to the roster. While operating these cars in multiples expands capacity during peak seasons, it also allows for a proper educational and historic interpretation of the equipment. The 1960 will publicly debut October 5.

POWER UP - B&O 1960 PREPARES TO ENTER SERVICE ON BSRM’S HOOSAC VALLEY TRAIN RIDE
There is a new addition to the fleet on Berkshire Scenic Railway Museum’s Hoosac Valley Train Ride that operates between Adams and North Adams, MA. Built by the Budd Company for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad’s “Daylight Speedliner” service, which ran between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, the 1960 is unique in its design. Featured include long distance coach seating, restaurant style booths with tables, a kitchen and baggage section. Its twin, the 1961 (currently preserved at the B&O Railroad Museum) were the only two rail diesel cars (RDCs) equipped this way. Currently on loan from the Budd RDC Foundation, 1960 will debut as Hoosac Valley’s first class car just in time for fall foliage in the Berkshires.

This weekend new batteries were installed. Each of these batteries weighs 300 pounds and the car requires eight in total. Not what you’d find in the family sedan!

Come take a ride this fall! 🍁
