Adams, Massachusetts, a community of 8,809 in the northern Berkshires, serves as a useful

case study for a former industrial town in rural Massachusetts with a massive industrial lot in its downtown commercial district. Located 138 miles from Boston, 65 miles from Albany, and 158 miles from New York City, Adams is geographically isolated from major population centers. The town of Adams is recognized for its natural resources, historic mill architecture, and strong community character. However, it has not capitalized on these assets the ways other nearby towns such as North Adams and Williamstown have.
