This is the last week to see the work of one of our first Gallery Artists, Sean McCusker, at Gallery North. He has been with us for two years and needs to move on to different areas. Don't miss your last chance to see his work at the gallery with the last viewing on Saturday, May 30th, 2026.

Sean McCusker creates mysterious landscapes filled with light and color. His work inspires hope as the characters, surrounded by a dark world, seek the light just over the horizon.

Guest Artist Sarah Sutro gave a book reading at Gallery North last Wednesday, May 13th, to a packed crowd. If you missed the talk, her books are still available at the gallery as well as her artwork on display until the end of May.

Sarah Sutro’s work expresses patterns and rhythms of the natural world, especially the vast expanses of river she experienced living in Thailand and Bangladesh, and ocean inlets and marshes on US East and West coasts. Her acrylic and watercolor landscape paintings at Gallery North are filled with abstract marks and washes of color vividly representing nature. Bands of paint shimmer and overlap, suggesting movement and light on water. Passages of color contrast and dissolve into the atmosphere of late day sunlight and heat.

Sutro’s work has been shown and is in collections nationally and internationally. She has had residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Ossabaw Island Foundation, Millay Colony for the Arts, Blue Mountain Center, American Academy of Rome, Art Dulcinium (Montenegro) and the Goetemann residency in Rocky Neck, Gloucester. In 2009 she took part in a water residency at Blue Mountain, where artists, writers and filmmakers came together to share their work and discuss the issue of water conservancy and environmental awareness. She is a recipient of Po***ck Krasner, Mass Cultural Council, and Taconic Foundation grants, and been a faculty at colleges and universities in the area, including Emerson College, AIB at Lesley University, Mass College of Art and Design, Union Institute and University and UMass Boston.

This Wednesday, May 13th, Gallery North will be hosting a talk by Sarah Sutro at 6pm. Sarah is also our guest artist for the month of May, so be sure to come see her works of art and literature.

As well as poems touching on color, she will read from her book of essays, COLORS: Passages through Art, Asia and Nature, about the making of natural inks from plants in Asia. This is a free event hosted at Gallery North, 9 Eagle Street, North Adams, MA.

Meet the artist at this First Friday Opening Reception at Gallery North!

Don't miss your last chance to see the astounding watercolors of Michelle Maher at Gallery North. The show will be closing on April 25th, so come see this amazing work before it is off the walls.

Growing up in the northern Berkshires, Michelle Maher started drawing and painting at a young age. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a BFA in Printmaking in 1991. Her career transitioned from visual merchandising and graphic design to copy editing, while she continued to pursue fiber arts, jewelry-making, and mixed-media art as Sunfleur1 Productions.

Michelle’s current focus is watercolor painting. Her style is traditional with a touch of whimsy, often featuring animals and nature. She has recently begun creating watercolor pet portraits to further challenge herself.

Come see some new artwork by permanent artist Barbara Patton Friday, April 3rd, 5-7pm! The exhibit also includes new work by permanent gallery artists Marilyn Cavallari, Sean McCusker, Barbara Patton, Stephen Dankner, and Carol Shumans; as well as Guest Artist Michelle Maher(Sunfleur1).

Barbara Patton’s alternatively fired ceramic work is fired quickly with a rush of flame, smoke and excitement. The fiery chaos of smoke-firing, using natural and chemical materials combined with elements of form and surface, create both fragile yet hardened objects from the earth.
