Which time of day suits you best: the fresh start of the morning or the calm of the evening? 🌙✨

Jean-Frédéric Schall takes us into an 18th-century bo***ir with two intimate paintings, each measuring just 23.5 cm in height. In Morning Toilet, a woman prepares for the day in front of her mirror. What are you making with apples this season? 🍎

This maid has put down her broom, kicked off her shoes and is sitting peeling an apple. Cornelis Bisschop painted her in 1667 in the entrance hall of a house, right between indoors and outdoors. Apple season is the perfect excuse to get into the kitchen. Will you bake a warm apple pie, simmer a pot of apple compote, or keep it simple and just eat one straight from the hand?

Wat maak jij dit seizoen met appels? 🍎🍏

How would you like to remember your loved one in a meaningful way? 🤍

In the 19th century, people worked human hair into jewellery in all kinds of ways. Hair was a sentimental and physical keepsake of a friendship, a family member or someone who had died. This silver filigree brooch holds a braid of hair from the Dutch writer and poet Petronella Moens. It was a treasured possession of her friend, the artist Margaretha Cornelia Boellaard, who portrayed Moens, who was partially sighted, several times.

Fresco Sam-Sin, philologist, OVT reviewer and founding lead for the Kreukelcollectief: 'Petronella Moens wrote, published and had her say in the world. I love that. I suspect we would have understood each other. Her poor eyesight was part of her life, but it was certainly not the most interesting thing about her.'

What’s the most you would pay for a loaf of bread? 🍞

In the 17th century, the Dutch ate bread at almost every meal! But not all bread was created equal: white wheat bread was a luxury enjoyed by the wealthy, while rye and other coarse-grain breads were everyday staples for most people. 🥖

Who has been a mentor in your life? ✨

This painting was long known as 'Telemachus and Mentor', a scene from Homer's Odyssey. In the story, Odysseus' son Telemachus is guided by the goddess Athena, who takes the form of his father's old friend Mentor. Researchers now think, however, that the painting may not show this story at all. It is probably based on a knight's novel or a different myth. Who do you see? 🏹

Wie was een mentor voor jou? ✨

Would you brave the North Sea for a photo like this? 🌊

"I genuinely had no idea of the scale and complexity of what goes on behind the scenes." Kadir van Lohuizen travelled to places almost no one ever visits: offshore wind farms, hydrogen plants, CO₂ storage sites and data centres in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom. Getting there took time and patience. He even had to complete offshore training before he was allowed to go along.

The result is New Energy, a close-up look at a transition that mostly happens out of sight. It's this year's Document Netherlands exhibition, the Rijksmuseum's annual photography commission on a current social theme. 📷

Also on view now in the photography gallery is Document Netherlands Junior. Ten secondary school and mbo students photographed the same theme after a masterclass with Van Lohuizen and Rijksmuseum experts.
