The diamond museum Amsterdam is a museum located at the Museumplein in Amsterdam. The museum was founded in 2007 by Ben Meier of Coster Diamonds.

Het ontstaan van diamanten, uitleg over de 4c's, kroonjuwelen, een originele slijptafel uit de oude fabriek op het Waterlooplein. Een tijdlijn waar je de tijd voor moet nemen, beroemde diamantberovingen, een 'van Gogh' een maak een 'Royal selfie'. Dat is nog niet alles! Een 'bekroonde' kronencollectie, een unieke katana, een statieportret, een bling-bling tennisracket en natuurlijk een apenschedel met bijna 17.000 briljant geslepen diamanten. Allemaal in een pand!

How does a rough diamond become a polished gem? 💎

Before a diamond can reveal its brilliance, it goes through several highly precise stages. Cleaving or sawing, bruting and polishing each play an important role in shaping the final stone. 💍

One of the first steps is sawing. To divide a diamond into two or more pieces, a remarkably thin phosphor bronze saw blade, just 0.05 to 0.14 mm thick, is coated with a mixture of diamond powder and oil. The blade can rotate at an incredible 4,500 to 6,500 revolutions per minute!

Known as the Brunswick Blue, this remarkable 13.75-carat pear-shaped diamond was sold in Geneva in 1874 from the collection of the Duke of Brunswick. Since then, the diamond has had a fascinating history, although its current owner remains unknown.

🤩 3,106 carats of history: meet the rough Cullinan diamond!

The Cullinan remains the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered. But how do you turn a 3,106-carat rough diamond into a collection of sparkling gems?

In 1907, the Asscher Company of Amsterdam was entrusted with this extraordinary task. After months of studying the stone, they carefully determined where it should be cleaved. The first attempt on 10 February 1908 ended unexpectedly when the cleaving knife broke, leaving the diamond untouched. Later attempts succeeded, and over the following eight months, the Cullinan was divided and cut into 9 large and 96 smaller diamonds.

The largest stone, the flawless 530.2-carat Cullinan I, was set in the royal sceptre of England as its pear-shaped pièce de resistance. 💎

A royal diamond with a fascinating history. 💎

The Queen Mary II of Holland diamond is one of the historic diamonds associated with the Dutch royal family, the House of Oranje-Nassau.

In 1690, Queen Mary II acquired a rough diamond for 12,338 English pounds. It was later cut into a 39.75-carat pear-shaped rose-cut diamond and eventually set in a tiara surrounded by other rose-cut diamonds.

Today, you can discover a replica of this remarkable royal diamond at the Diamond Museum Amsterdam, as part of our temporary Highlights exhibition.

In order to make a sparkling stone 💍 from a rough diamond, processing is necessary. The most important steps of the processing are: cleaving or sawing, bruting and polishing. 💎

To split a diamond into two or more pieces, the stone must be sawn. For this process a thin sawing disc (0.05 to 0.14 mm thick) made of phosphor bronze is used, the edge of which is coated with a mixture of diamond powder and oil. The stone is sawn at 4500 to 6500 revolutions per minute.
