Now on view at the Rothko Museum Rotko muzejs / Rothko Museum: The Other Mind: Roger Ballen. A Retrospective

Roger Ballen has long been one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary photography, whose unsettling, poetic, and deeply psychological work blurs the boundaries between documentary and fiction, reality and dream, human and animal, sanity and madness. This retrospective, curated specifically for the Rothko Museum, presents his evolution from stark documentary realism to intricately staged, psychologically charged compositions.

The exhibition’s curator, Aivars Baranovskis, warns: “Ballen’s images are not meant to be understood ‘they are meant to be felt. They provoke, disturb, and linger in the mind. This exhibition invites you to confront your own subconscious, to explore the other mind’ the one we often ignore, but which Ballen fearlessly exposes.”

Supported by Daugavpils City Council and the State Culture Capital Foundation of Latvia.

Curated by Aivars Baranovskis.

Engaging with diverse source material from art history and social media to cinema, celebrity imagery, car culture, and Puerto Rico, Pérez appropriates familiar images and reworks them into his own visual language. Rooted between printmaking and painting, his process builds layered color through paint-loaded paper, echoing a four-color printing logic rather than traditional brushwork. His drawings, while strongly linear, are richly built up with overlapping color and content, bringing together portraits, landscapes, text, and objects.

Enoc Pérez’s drawings will be on view as part of the artist’s upcoming first solo exhibition in Amsterdam with the gallery, opening in September.

This presentation marks the premiere of this body of work in Amsterdam, alongside a selection of recent paintings. Together with a forthcoming book published by the gallery, the works trace Pérez’s ongoing exploration of image-making and cultural memory.

This summer, the gallery will be primarily focused on producing a series of beautifully crafted publications. Simultaneously, from June through August, we invite you to visit the gallery for a summer group exhibition featuring a curated selection of unseen and new high-quality works on paper.

The presentation will offer an intimate overview of diverse artistic approaches and generations, bringing together contemporary masters in dialogue with historical perspectives alongside new guest artists, while highlighting the versatility of works on paper within contemporary art.

Unseen and new works coming directly from the studios of Gavin Turk, Harland Miller, Helen Beard, and Lucienne O’Mara will be included, alongside works by Donald Baechler (Estate) and the recently passed-away John Copeland, as well as previously unexhibited works from the secondary market by Jonathan Lasker, Eddie Martinez, Allen Jones and Miriam Cahn.
