As part of the exhibition “Gaza - No Words - See The Exhibit, an official collateral event of La Biennale di Venezia 2026 organised by the Palestine Museum at Palazzo Mora, artist Patrizia Bonardi presented 'FOR THE CHILDREN – Thinking To Gaza'.

The performance involved 24 students from the Marco Polo Art High School, together with their teachers.

For more than fifteen years, Bonardi’s artistic practice has used medical bandages and beeswax as symbolic materials to reflect on individual and collective wounds. Since 2024, the artist has developed an intense ritual of knotting bandages: each knot is dedicated to the memory of a child killed in the Gaza Strip, transforming the repeated gesture of care into an act of testimony and solidarity.

During the performance, the students were invited to lift large medical bandages, symbolically turning them into sails, recalling the Solidarity Flotilla. The bandages, normally associated with healing wounds, were thus transformed into sails of hope, entrusted to the hands of the younger generations.

The movement of the sails made from knotted bandages conveys the strength of a collective action that brought together art, education, and civic engagement, entrusting young people with the task of imagining a world free from injustice.

“I am Ambra Formenti, a teacher at the Marco Polo Art High School in Venice. As teachers this year, we decided to dedicate part of our educational programming to what is happening in Palestine, particularly in Gaza.

This specific project is in collaboration with the Palestine Museum and the artist Patrizia Bonardi. We have touched upon the theme of what is happening in Gaza from various points of view; we have addressed the historical roots of the situation, invited expert journalists to the school, and made direct connections with Gaza. However, with this performance, we tried to focus specifically on the role and importance of art.

Genocide is something unthinkable, something unspeakable. I believe that through art, through images, and through emotions, it is truly possible to try to think the unthinkable and speak the unspeakable.

I believe it was a beautiful experience for our students. I want to thank the artist and the Palestine Museum, because it is extremely important in Venice to talk about these issues using a language that is accessible to everyone, and to actively involve young people. This is their world, and unfortunately, schools often fail to discuss what is happening in the world. I believe it is vital for young people to engage with these topics.”
