While bringing the exhibition together, we felt like even though the two artists worked separately in their own studios, a conversation was building between their works, through colour, texture, and theme.

Both artists bring otherworldly creatures into the human world through their laboriously detailed, whimsical works. Here, Hasmukh’s speckled animals in space sit in contrast to Vinita’s circular, interactive sculpture where giant eyeballs and vines creep across a strange game of snakes and ladders.

Part of the ongoing exhibition is a work made by Vinita at her residency at Fondazione Officine Saffi in 2025. In this work, she expanded her practice by combining material exploration, weaving together textures, glazes and clay bodies with her literary and post-colonial feminist research relating to the writers Igiaba Scego and Anita Desai.

The piece takes a form of tree-bark-like structure, its cracks and hollow spaces symbolising fractured identities, and resilience across geographies. During her time there, she worked with two contrasting clay bodies: Dharavi clay (black) and a European clay (white), to unite into a single form while also experimenting with glaze recipes. 🎨

Animals frolic in joyful abandon in Makwana’s paintings. In rest, curious, playful, at peace, and surprised to be discovered, these animals become the prime subjects of the works. These fantastical creatures with their varied colours, patterns, shapes and textures peacefully coexist in his imaginary gardens 🐒🪴
