Chatterjee & Lal Keep up to date with what is going on at C&L. Chatterjee & Lal was formed in 2003 by husband and wife team Mortimer Chatterjee and Tara Lal.

Based in Mumbai’s Colaba art district, the gallery program is focused both on the work of emerging artists, mid-career artists and, increasingly, historical material. Over the last twelve years the gallery and its artists have formed an important node in the city’s maturing art scene. Gallery artists show globally and the gallery itself is an active participant in select art fairs and gallery exchanges. The directors often write on art for national and international publications and are published authors.

Sankho Chaudhuri was part of the first generation of teachers in Baroda and his style is representative of modernist sculpture practiced around the world in the mid-20th century. It favours abstract motifs rendered in clean lines.

Mort discusses the art historical legacy of Sankho Chaudhuri’s sculpture through the lens of the intimate scales of the works on display.

Never seen beforehand sketches and watercolours from the 50s are also part of the exhibition.

For Sankho, everyday materials - sheet metal, kitchen foil and toothpaste tubes - were teased into maquettes through which sculptural form could be tested and discovered. The final works, in bronze, aluminium, stone and marble, drew both on deliberate and accidental forms encountered in daily life: birds, humans, or shapes traced in a thali or bitten into toast. Such prompts gave rise to compact, formal works rooted in modernist discipline.

Mort takes a walk through a forest of sculptures by DLN Reddy. These important works from the early 2000s have never been shown publicly till date.

For DLN, the hardware shops of Hyderabad offered a field of discovery: objects to be cut, cracked, bent and reassembled into strange, revelatory patterns and structures. His assemblages draw on a post-modern language of fracture, excess and improvisation, moving away from the smoothness and universal claims of high modernism.
