A significant part of military logistics is transport – the movement of soldiers and supplies to where they are required is crucial. Guides like this one from 1980 were produced to support drivers to move beyond basic map reading to navigate in any environment.

The Royal Corps of Transport was one of the Corps that joined to form the Royal Logistic Corps in 1993.

The MOD War Detectives play a vital role in identifying missing British Service Personnel from the two World Wars and the Korean War. Working closely with partners including the Commonwealth War Graves Commission their work has two main strands – the identification of remains recently recovered from the battlefields, and the identification of those currently buried in graves marked ‘Known unto God’.

As the Cold War deepened and the threat of nuclear, biological or chemical (NBC) warfare remained ever-present, the ‘Survive to Fight’ handbook was produced. Pictured is the second edition that was issued in 1990.

Using a series of flowcharts and diagrams, the guide talks a soldier in an NBC situation through everything from how to correctly wear protective equipment, to decontamination drills and first aid for chemical casualties.

As war broke out in the summer of 1914, not a nation on Earth understood the magnitude of what they were about to face. To win it, whole populations had to be mobilised, and neutrality was impossible. The scale of destruction was unfathomable and no life was left unchanged.

Our understanding of this complex conflict has been coloured by a blinkered approach to popular history. It has ignored the fact that Denmark actively participated in laying minefields as soon as war began; that the first British shots were fired in West Africa, by a black man; and that the first Australian casualties occurred not at Gallipoli, but in the Pacific.

In this engaging evening talk, Alex explores her latest book – Ring of Fire: A New Global History of the Outbreak of the First World War – co-authored by Nicolai Eberholst.

Were you issued these pamphlets?

The second British Army of the Rhine – the BAOR – formed in the wake of the Second World War. Initially to occupy Germany as Europe stabilised, it became a force for protection as the Cold War deepened.

Over the following 50 years, tens of thousands of service people and their families were deployed to Germany. Pamphlets like these were designed and issued to support the transition.
