📣 Event Reminder: The History of Cycling with the Veteran-Cycle Club - HAPPENING TODAY!📣

WHAT: A display of historical cycling, from the Victorians through to the late 1930s!
WHEN: Friday the 28th of August, 2026
WHERE: The Square, Wi******er, SO23 9ES - just outside the front of the museum!

Did you know that Wi******er was once home to a famous cyclist? This year is the 160th anniversary of the birth of Frederick 'Dickie' Frost, a Wi******er resident and champion cyclist of the 1890s. At the height of his career, he had won practically all of the trophies offered in this country for cycle racing. Born in Wi******er, he lived at No. 15 The Square, where The London Camera Exchange is today.

On Friday the 28th of August, join the Veteran-Cycle Club outside Wi******er City Museum to celebrate this anniversary year. This group of vintage bike enthusiasts was founded on the 25th of June, 1955, to promote the riding and conservation of older cycles as well as the study of cycles and cycling history. Come along to discover historic bicycles from the Victorian period through to the late 1930s on display in The Square!

Display Highlights:

🚲Bicycles from across Dickie Frost’s lifetime, charting the evolution of cycle design from the late Victorian era to 1939.

🏁Machines similar to those that Frost would have raced will be on display.

🏛️Wi******er City Museum’s Dickie Frost display and 'Penny Farthing' bike (viewable with an admission ticket).

🚵Veteran-Cycle Club members will be demonstrating how these historic bicycles are ridden, maintained, and raced.

📣 Living History Workshop Announcement: Meet at Georgian Sailor!📣

WHEN: Sunday the 23rd of August 2026

It’s 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar has been won and life in the Royal Navy is good(ish). Able Seaman Jack Gill has been granted shore leave from HMS Huzzah to find some new recruits (children will do…). This fun and interactive workshop includes details about life on board a Georgian Royal Navy ship, object handling, and learning a sea shanty with Martin's Heritage World!

We had a brilliant time welcoming Legio Secunda Augusta to the museum last month!

Here are some highlights from their displays, including:
- A glorious replica helmet
- Handmade Gladiator leg armour (a greave)
- A replica shield
- A Hand-painted shrine

Not to mention all of their fantastic, meticulously reconstructed kit too!

We are having a great time with Wessex Archaeology and their VR headset today!

They have a huge range of reconstructed environments that you can explore, including:
- An Anglo-Saxon Hall
- A Medieval Townhouse
- A Roman Villa
- The underwater wreck of a WW2 Fairey Barracuda aircraft

These Virtual Reality environments are not only fun to play with, but they provide archaeologists with the ability to reconstruct the sites that they excavate and explore ideas about the positions of certain objects and features of the archaeology.

There is still plenty of time to come down and immerse yourself into the worlds this afternoon! Explore the sites and sounds of a historical house, with every detail carefully reconstructed from archaeological excavation findings.

📣Event Reminder: Anglo-Saxon Hall Virtual Reality Experience with Wessex Archaeology - HAPPENING TODAY!📣

WHEN: Saturday the 8th of August 2026
WHERE: Wi******er City Museum, The Square, Wi******er, SO23 9ES, Hampshire, United Kingdom
WHAT TIME: 10:30am - 16:00pm

Wessex Archaeology is a well recognised leading heritage company, which excavates hundreds of archaeological sites every year, and handles thousands of real archaeological objects. Their team regularly use Virtual Reality (VR) to help them visualise and explore the sites that they excavate, and now you can see this fascinating side of archaeological work!

Using Wessex's VR headset, step into the home of an Anglo-Saxon for a fully immersive experience. Explore the sites and sounds of a historical house, with every detail carefully reconstructed from archaeological excavation findings. It has been designed for people of all ages, from five years old to octogenarians. This experience has no set targets, so people can explore the scene at their leisure, learning all about how it feels to be a Saxon.

There will also be an object handling station, with real artefacts and high-quality replicas.

The Grand Victory Gala Fete was held at North Walls Park, Wi******er, on August the 6th, 1945, 81 years ago today!

With Victory in Europe secured, and Victory in the Far East imminent, the people of Wi******er had been hosting parties throughout the summer months since May 8th. The Grand Victory Gala Fete in North Walls is a great example of this, featuring festivities such as horse rides and fancy dress parades, which participants likely spent a lot of time creatively working on, due to clothing rationing. We hope that you enjoy this series of photos from our collection that illustrate the day!

Image 1: A horse being led by Reg Best, and being ridden by Grace Coombes and another woman, at the North Walls Park 'Grand Victory Gala Fete', believed to have been held on August 6th, 1945.

Image 2: Nuns Road fancy dress parade, being led by a 'cigarette' followed by Mrs Proctor leading the 'bride and groom' with 'Mother Riley and Kitty' at the rear of the procession. This is thought to have been at North Walls Park as part of the Victory Gala.
