Six fascinating Regimental museums all based on Peninsula Barracks showcasing heroic exploits and daring deeds from The King's Royal Hussars, The Royal Hampshire Regiment, The Royal Green Jackets (Ri**es), The Gurkhas, The Adjutant General's Corps and The Ri**es Museum. WMM is putting a Spooky Spotlight on the strangest and grossest things in our collections, to celebrate Halloween this year!

Our choice for this week is a force-feeding kit, which was used in Military Detention Barracks throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The wooden mouth gag would be tied around the face, with the rubber tube being inserted into the gap. Part of the tube would be forced down the throat, with a funnel attached to the other end, down which liquified food would be poured.

Hunger strikes are usually associated with the Suffragettes, but they were also undertaken in military detention barracks by Soldiers Under Sentence (SUS). They would be used as either a form of protest, or a way to be moved into a hospital setting.

📆 A Date for your Diaries - October Half-Term at The AGC Museum📆

This week's image shows No. 5 platoon, 4RB, at huts in Stavros Gorge, Greece, 1916. The R***e Brigade Chronicle covering the events of that year noted "From 22 January to 1 August there was not much of interest to report", and that "from September till the end of the year, nothing of much note occurred". During the brief window in between, some shelling was reported.

The Chronicle describes that "Work was carried on on the trench-line by night. During the day the Battalion lived in a deep gorge in the hills some two miles in rear of the trenches which were on the flat about 500 yards from the river."

🐅 Tiger Tuesday 🐅

This week's tiger is carved in rock and photographed by the 1st Battalion in India in the 1930s 🫡 This is just one of a number of Royal Hampshire Regiment cap badges carved in places they served around the world.

In the top corners are the numbers 37 and 67, honouring the the regiments origins in the 37th Regiment of Foot and the 67th Regiment of Foot.

UPDATE: The Museum will now be closed from Saturday 17th October - Saturday 31st October, reopening on Monday, 2nd November, except for any pre-booked group visits or events. Access for these visits and events will be via external stairs. If you're expecting to attend a pre-booked event at the Museum and have concerns about accessibility or any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

We're sorry to be missing half term, but we can't wait for you all to see our brand new gallery once work is complete!

Did you know that the WRAC uniform was designed by Norman Hartnell, best known for being the Dressmaker to the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth II?🪡

This hat from our collection, dating to 1962, was one of Hartnell's designs.

Apologies for the incorrect rank identification of the hat! It had previously been mislabelled in our database system and I (the humble Social Media Assistant) am not a hat or rank expert. I appreciate the corrections in the comments.

📯An Invitation to An Evening with General Sir Richard Shirreff📯

The Museum team are excited to invite you to the inaugural event in our Balaclava Series of talks, featuring General Sir Richard Shirreff, former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe at NATO.

Join us on Thursday 12th November to hear General Sir Richard discuss "The Need to Change Our Strategy: Trump, Putin, Russia, Ukraine, and NATO”, offering his insights into the changing international security landscape and the challenges facing the Western alliance.

Tickets are £18, and include a welcoming glass of Crémant, soft drinks and light refreshments. Included in your ticket price is also a complementary visit to the Museum, which will be open from 17:45.
