This is an Army Educational Corps side cap that belonged to Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Graham Browning Johnstone. He would have worn it during the Second World War whilst attached to the Indian Army.

Johnstone's service did not begin with the AEC. He served with the Royal Field Artillery/Royal Horses Artillery throughout the First World War, being stationed at Egypt (1915-1917), Aden (July-Sept 1915), and Italy (Aug-Nov 1918). He also briefly served with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from March 1916 - August 1917.

He was demobilised on 31st October 1919, although would go on to commission as a Lieutenant in the AEC in December 1920. In November 1927 he was appointed as Acting Staff Captain in India, and then promoted to Captain in February 1931.

Between January 1935-September 1938 Johnstone was the Commandant at King George's Royal Indian Military School, located in the state of Himachal Pradesh (Northern India). In April 1939, he moved to Kitchener College, Nowgong, where he served as Chief Instructor until 1943.

He is noted as serving with G.H.Q. in Burma at some point during the Second World War, and also as achieving the rank of Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel on 12th July 1944.

Johnstone retired as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel on 7th October 1948, having served in the British Army for over 30 years.

Today's comes from our wonderful WRAC collection.

These two photographs show very early WRAC officers, likely just after 1950 outside of an unidentified building. Unfortunately the photographs are unlabelled so we do not know the names of these women either.

We suspect these come from the very early days of the WRAC as the women are still wearing old ATS uniforms. If you have any further information, either on the who the women are or their location, please comment below. We would love to be able to update our photograph descriptions.

This photograph from our collection dates from October 1964. It shows Major General Sir Raymond Douglas Coate, Paymaster-in-Chief, RAPC (middle), and Brigadier General L.B. Markey, US Army Finance Centre (right), at the Allison Transmission Powerama exhibition, in Indianapolis.

To the left is Donald Conner, Assistant Divisional Comptroller of the Allison Division, General Motors Corporation, pointing out some information regarding a small jet engine prop, on display at the exhibition.

Today's is this photograph from the Catterick Resettlement Centre, at (now) Catterick Garrison, Yorkshire c.1940s.

Catterick Garrison was set up by Sir Robert Baden Powell in 1907, after he was appointed into the Territorial Army. His HQ in Richmond Castle was too small to establish a garrison, so Catterick was chosen to be developed into a military camp.

Upon the outbreak of WW1 construction began, although this was originally supposed to be a temporary camp that could accommodate around 40,000 men. This was firstly called Richmond Camp, changing to Catterick Camp in 1915. It would not be renamed again until 1973, when it became Catterick Garrison.

The role of Catterick Camp was varied, especially after it became a permanent military barracks, following the end of the First World War and partitioning of Ireland in 1921. In both the First and Second World War, parts of the Camp were used to house prisoners of war.

The Resettlement Centre served to prepare serving soldiers for employment in civilian life. There were multiple areas of study, such as police and prison service, civil service, commerce and business studies, as well as general trades (carpentry, mechanics, plumbing etc.). All of which were focused on training soldiers in skills they could transfer into jobs outside of the military.

These men were likely soldiers preparing for life in a civilian role following the end of the Second World War.

This photograph may look familiar if you have visited the museum recently. 🔎

This is SQMS Charles Williams, APC, and our 'Before 1901' display case features his collection, kindly on loan to us from his family.

Williams originally joined the 2nd Battalion Royal Welch Fusiliers in July 1886, serving with them for 5 years before transferring into the Military Staff Clerks in December 1891. Whilst he he held the rank of Sergeant, and was posted to The Curragh, County Kildare, Ireland.

Williams transferred, again, to the Army Pay Corps upon its formation in April 1893. Two months later he was posted to Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland. It was whilst stationed here that this photograph was taken, by Henry Holborn. This photograph provides quite the clear example of APC uniform at this time:- note Williams' hat, featuring the cap badge for the Corps, and also the three chevrons upon his arm, denoting the rank of Sergeant.

The APC Records indicate that sometime around 1893 he got married and also extended his military service. In April 1899 he was promoted to Staff Sergeant, and during the Second Anglo-Boer War, he achieved the rank of Corporal. His medal set is currently on display at the Museum (Queen's South Africa Medal w/ 3 bars, King's South Africa Medal w/ 2 bars, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal).

Following the war he was promoted to Staff Quartermaster Sergeant (4th April 1905), and his final posting was to Exeter in May 1905. Williams was discharged from the Army on 28th July 1907, aged 41, having served for 21 years. His discharge papers describe him as 'a good clerk, painstaking and industrious', with an 'exemplary' character, having no offences across his whole service.
