(86)

Stroll along a peaceful riverside road into secluded woodland gardens, to find a stunning 18th century interior design - and the principal art gallery for the borough of Richmond upon Thames. Orleans House has a rich and vibrant history, from the baroque Octagon room, which was designed by renowned architect James Gibbs, to a main gallery which hosts five temporary exhibitions each year - ranging from the historical to the contemporary. We attract over 56,000 visitors annually. The Stables Gallery, is housed in evocative 19th century stables buildings and stages approximately seven contemporary and community exhibitions a year. Visitors of all ages can try out their own artistic talents in a pre-booked workshop, or to soak up more history, Marble Hill Park and Ham House are nearby. Finish off with a coffee at Karmarama Café (Wednesdays to Sundays) in the North Stables at the rear of the Gallery. All of these amenities can be easily reached from London and the South East by road, rail, or even by boat.

This week we’re back with West London-based artist Ann Marie Whaley!

Ann Marie’s work is based on the landscape and people of her local area and England’s south coast. She is also one of 20 member artists currently exhibiting in the (currently closed) Stables Gallery exhibition, The Fountain at 20.

Whaley says:
“I lay claim to both of my homes by drawing and painting in charcoal, acrylics and oils.
Weather permitting, I like to work outdoors, which is unlike any other creative experience and my personal favourite, nourishing my imagination and refreshing my personal stockpile of colour, shape and line.

Weather preventing, I use the collections in London's many galleries to learn from such great landscape painters as Corot, Rubens, Poussin, Cezanne, Diebenkorn, Morandi and Macke.”

Stay tuned to find out more from the Fountain Gallery team as well as further updates on reopening.

Today marks the anniversary of the first coronavirus lockdown.

We never could have imagined how challenging the year ahead would be, however, today we are considering the positives. One of which is how much we have enjoyed seeing you all enjoy the gallery woods and gardens over the past year. From dog walking to bird watching and even sledging, it has been wonderful to see the grounds in your photos and comments on social media.

This image was taken by Carmel for our nature photography challenge. She writes ‘Yellow is the colour of the sun, smiley faces, hope, positivity, friendship & daffodils (my mum’s favourite flower).’

We look forward to seeing you at the gallery again soon.

The Stables Café at Orleans House Gallery now offers a range of three delicious, caffeine free lattes which are perfect for anyone who is looking to reduce their caffeine intake and wants to try something different.

Joining their popular golden Turmeric latte from Wunder Workshop are two new nourishing blends from Blendsmiths Chai and Beetroot. The caffeine free blends are made with a combination of delicious, comforting roots and spices. The key ingredients of each have claimed health benefits, although you would need to drink a fair amount to fully reap those benefits, it is still nice to know that you are putting good stuff in the tank whilst walking the dog, taking a walk through the woodlands or along the riverside or accompanying the children to the playground. All three lattes are available with a choice of dairy and non-dairy milks and the cafe's menu shows their recommended milk option to get the best taste combination. Not only do they taste great but they look good too.

The Stables Café is open Tuesday-Sunday from 9.00am-5.00pm. The kitchen currently closes at 3.00pm Tuesday-Thursday and 4.00pm Friday-Sunday

Day 3
So you are dog friendly. So how come when I turn up with my two dogs on my own I can’t order breakfast and coffee. I come in, but not up to the counter, only to be reminded of the notice that I had dutifully just read outside. ‘No dogs allowed inside’ blah blah...But, I ask, can you take my order outside, where I’m happy to sit? No! We are not allowed to take orders. (I believe you had 3 other customers at the time, no queue). Madness!!
Since the stunning transformation completion last March 1st 2018 courtesy the Heritage Lottery Fund, Orleans House Gallery is now a Grade 1 listed building. If you're interested in history, then just visit!! Named after Louis Phillipe king of France, duc d'Orleans who was in exile & lived here for 2 years...
Wonderful afternoon at the Cathy Cooper Life Through a Lens exhibition, these were our favourite shots - magnificent x
Totally gorgeous house, galley and gardens that has something for everyone, particularly those interested in local history and anecdote.
I went along last Friday. It was my first time at Orleans House .. Our guide Simon was really enthusiastic about the history of, not only the of this beautiful house, but of Twickenham in general. Had a really interesting afternoon I learnt so much and am looking forward to going back again soon. Well worth a visit! ❤️
Next Week Tuesday at 13.15 the last leisure lecture about art history for 2018. Many thanks to a fantastic year of interesting lecturers and lovely audiences!
