Marble Hill

Marble Hill Marble Hill is set in 66 acres of beautiful public parkland. The house and gardens were intended as an Arcadian retreat from crowded 18th-century London.

Our grounds offer historic trees, sports facilities, restored 18th century gardens and an elegant villa. A day out at Marble Hill is a real treat as this beautiful Palladian villa is set in 66 acres of outstanding riverside parkland near Richmond in West London. Marble Hill was built for the remarkable Henrietta Howard, mistress of King George II when he was Prince of Wales, and friend and confida

nte of some of the cleverest men in England. Its grand interiors have been exquisitely restored and recreated and include a fine collection of early Georgian paintings. There can be few places in England which better recall the atmosphere of fashionable Georgian life.

The Marble Hill Meadows are looking fantastic and are well worth a visit at this time of year. A partnership between English Heritage and Plant Life to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III is seeing the creation and development of 100 meadows at our sites, and Marble Hill is one of them! 🦋

One of the ways we manage the more dominant grasses in meadow spaces is to introduce Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor), a semi-parasitic plant that attaches its roots to the roots of grasses, feeding off its nutrients and reducing its vigour and competitiveness. In turn, this helps to create a more diverse meadow, with a fairer balance of wildflower species and grasses. 🦋

The garden team at Marble Hill initially had to buy in Yellow Rattle seed to spread it widely enough to make a difference, but we now have enough of this very beneficial species that we'll be able to collect the seed ourselves and use it to sow across any remaining thicker swards of grass. As well as being a very useful plant, it's also very pretty! 🦋

Marble Hill House is framed by four elegant hooped arcades planted with Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) a hardwood tree often confused with Beech. The inspiration for this feature is taken from a c.1749 survey of Marble Hill, and is designed to provide a shaded walkway around the more open terraces leading down to the river Thames. 🌳

Planted no more than five years ago, the maturing Hornbeams are beginning to be shaped along the hoops in order to create 'windows' out into the terraces and also into the garden quarters behind the arcades. Initially, they were half a metre shorter, but additional height has been added to create a more harmonious balance between the arcades and the house. 🌳

It will take a while to cover the walkways entirely, but painstaking work is carried out each year to ensure that the young trees are trained correctly, and once they are mature and strong enough, the hoops won't be required to support the structure. 🌳

Here are some images of the arcades today alongside an image of what they should eventually look like. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳

Our Flower Garden has been a riot of colour this spring and it has provided some lovely seasonal interest for our visitors.

We are still being quite experimental with the planting in the flowerbeds here, and many of the specimens on display have been grown from seed by our garden team and volunteers. One thing they all have in common is that they would have been available to purchase or grow during the early 1700s, when Henrietta Howard was laying out her gardens here at Marble Hill.

Here are a couple of photos taken by Visitor Assistant Helen just after our Thursday volunteer group had been in to tidy things up for the weekend.
