🍋 A Taste of History in the Victorian Kitchen 🍋

Join us this Sunday 30 August, alongside our Steaming Sunday, and take a step back in time with a taste of Mrs Bird's Jumbles!

These crisp, knotted biscuits have a fascinating history stretching back to the Middle Ages. Their exact origins are uncertain, with possible links to the Middle East, Italy, France and Spain, but what we do know is that Jumbles have been enjoyed in England for centuries.

Our recipe comes from Victorian cookery writer Eliza Acton, whose Modern Cookery for Private Families was first published in 1843. Made with lemon zest, butter, eggs, flour and sugar, these traditional biscuits are crisp, pale and apparently perfect for dunking!

🔊 Turn your sound up and listen to the fantastic mechanical symphony of this Ruston Proctor diesel engine! ⚙️

Still going strong over 110 years after it was built in 1914, this incredible piece of industrial history is a wonderful reminder of the engineering ingenuity of the past.

🎓 The technology behind this "hot-bulb" heavy oil engine was pioneered by inventor Herbert Akroyd-Stuart in 1890. He collaborated closely with Professor William Robinson right here at University College Nottingham! In fact, the University of Nottingham still holds special Akroyd-Stuart memorial lectures to celebrate his groundbreaking discoveries.

Come and see this magnificent machine, along with more of our historic industrial engines, in action on our upcoming Summer Steaming Days:
