Papplewick Pumping Station

Papplewick Pumping Station Britain's finest Victorian fresh water Pumping Station. Just 8 miles north of Nottingham, NG15 9AJ

Set in the tranquil Nottinghamshire countryside Papplewick Pumping Station was built between 1882 and 1885 to meet Nottingham’s rapidly growing demand for clean fresh water. Its two steam driven James Watt beam engines were in constant use until 1969 when the site was converted to electric submersible pumps but the site continues to pump 3 million gallons of water for the city. Papplewick is regar

Now an ACE Accredited museum, the pumping station holds eight steam events per year where visitors can see the pumping engines in operation under steam. Hello everyone,
The Easter weekend was our first steam event of 2025 and our very first ever English Civil War event. Despite the poor weather on Monday everyone appeared to enjoy the both days. During the two days visitors were treated wonderful diplays of Falconry and the English Civil War reenactors displays. In addition Papplewick ran it Watts beam engines, Linby winding engines, Miniature railway and Reservior trips.
I would like to remind everyone that Papplewick Pumping Station will on the 4th & 5th May be holding its Vintage & Classic Vehicle event. The station will be open from 10.00 AM until 4 PM.
I hope you like the pictures displayed and I look forward to seeing you again.

Our Story

Set in the tranquil Nottinghamshire countryside Papplewick Pumping Station was built between 1882 and 1885 to meet Nottingham’s rapidly growing demand for clean fresh water. Its two steam driven James Watt beam engines were in constant use until 1969 when the site was converted to electric submersible pumps but the site continues to pump 3 million gallons of water for the city. The Station is regarded as the finest surviving fresh water pumping station in England and is unique in retaining all of its original features including its six hand fired Lancashire boilers, two James Watt beam engines and underground reservoir. The Trustees, in conjunction with the University of Nottingham and other stakeholders, are now working on the Water Education Trust project which aims to increase the public’s awareness of water related issues and encourage a better, more sustainable use of water.
