A family photograph kindly sent by Sophie Dorey, it shows the head of the Hucknall Flight Test Establishment, Ray Dorey OBE on his wedding day. At his side stands his best man, Ronnie Harker, OBE, Rolls-Royce liaison pilot.
Highly respected in aviation circles, Ray Dorey was not only an engineer, but a skilled man-manager. He led the staff at Hucknall from 1935 until just after the war when he transferred to Derby. His energy and can-do style achieved great things at Hucknall where he was remembered with respect and affection by the work force. It is sad that outside of Rolls-Royce histories, he is rarely recognised for his acievments by todays aviation writers.
Best Man, Ronnie Harker, will ever be remembered as the man who put the Merlin in the Mustang. Having been invited to fly an RAF Mustang, he recognised its abilities and its one shortcoming, its inability to operate efficiently at over 15,000 feet altitude. Returning to Hucknall, he persuaded Ray Dorey and then Ernest Hives that the new Merlin 60 Series engine would bring huge benefits to the Mustang. The rest, as they say, is history.

One of two men who could possibly compete for the title Mr Spitfire. One was Jeffrey Quill, Supermarine Development Test Pilot who was key to the continuous development of the Spitfire throughout the war, the other, seen here, is Alex Henshaw who was in charge of production testing of Spitfires and later Lancasters at the huge production plant at Castle Bromwich on the outskirts of Birmingham.
Henshaw, who for very many years held the record for flying from London to Cape Town and back is seen standing on the wing of the Rolls-Royce owned MkXIV Spitfire G-ALGT whilst the then Rolls-Royce Chief Test Pilot, Cliff Rogers sits in the cockpit.
