We wanted to share a sneak peek of our screening and live performance coming up next week.
There's still time to get your free ticket and join us for an evening of film followed by a devotional vocal performance.
Throughout the evening we will reflect on themes emerging within our current exhibition - Hamid Zénati: Two Steps at a Time.
The screening includes several short films that explore colonial violence in the Sahara and the resistance rooted in this environment. They will be briefly introduced by Emma Bouraba and include ‘Memories of an Unborn Sun’ (2024) by Marcel Mrejen, ‘Galb'Echaouf’ (2021) by Abdessamad el Montassir and ‘And still, it remains’ (2021) by Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah.
Following the screening, Assia Ghendir will present a devotional vocal performance in response to the natural forms, textures and designs that inspired Zénati’s 'all-over' style.
Please note a separate ticket is required for the screening and performance.

In Focus: Julian Abraham ‘Togar’ - Mampir
REꓘONCILIATION, the newly-opened exhibition by Indonesian artist Julian Abraham ‘Togar’ in Gallery 1 explores themes of hosting, closely linked to the Indonesian concept of mampir. Mampir doesn't translate directly into English, instead it conveys a sense of hosting by inviting someone to “come in, arrive, come over” that is ingrained into daily life in Indonesia.
As part of Togar’s exploration of how our gallery spaces can be used to welcome visitors, we’ve collaborated on a programme of events under the title Feedback Loop. These events, including listening sessions, informal gatherings, jam sessions, performances, and conversations, turn the gallery into a space of sonic exchange, mixing and intertwining the roles of ‘host’ and ‘guest’.
Feedback Loop will include some Mampir Sessions that will present the contributions of our surrounding communities and local collectives through intimate events in our galleries, allowing the exhibition to shift and evolve as it progresses.
The Feedback Loop series of events started last night with a jamming session led by poet Brother Portrait, and continues this weekend with a jam-packed schedule to celebrate the start of Togar’s exhibition.
These events are all free to attend, and you can book a free ticket at nottinghamcontemporary.org 🎟
