In Focus: Claudia Martínez Garay - Andean Cosmovision

Within the mountain of soil in gallery 2 are four prints on aluminium. These drawings are of Peruvian animals including a Jaguarundi, Spondylus shell, Cojinova fish and the tail of an otter. The bones of these native Peruvian species were found as offerings in excavated burials which are referenced throughout Claudia’s work.

These animals form part of an Andean Cosmovision, a term Claudia often refers to in her work. Referencing a point of convergence between the spiritual and the social, Andean Cosmovision acts as a sacred link between the cosmos and sky with the human and the earth. Claudia’s mountain is a metaphorical site where sacred and spiritual pre-Colombian objects are reconnected with their native land and animal cousins, binding the circular link between the universe’s internal and external worlds.

We have a little surprise for you too...if you take a closer look at Claudia's installation, you can see plant life growing freely on the soil mountain, where the lost artefacts are being further returned to their natural sites. Can you spot them?

If you are interested in learning more about Andean Cosmovision and Claudia's work, join us for our up
coming walkthrough exploring Martínez Garay's exhibition.

Our next Wednesday Walkthrough welcomes Sheyda Aisha Khaymaz; an artist, curator, and historian, to lead a tour of Hamid Zénati’s current exhibition.

Gallery 3 presents a section dedicated to exploring the context of Algerian independence, which heavily influenced Hamid and informed the development of his artwork. It was a time to explore what new Algerian Modernism would look like, and to create a distinct identity and national culture after more than a century of European rule. Sheyda contributed some of the explanatory captions in this section of our gallery and will delve into further conversation during the walkthrough.

If you're interested in art history, or would like to learn more about Algerian history and Hamid Zénati’s experience, join us for this special walkthrough.

The new season of the Screen at Contemporary, SLOW. FAST. STRANGE., starts in early August. The season presents a collection of films where the soundtrack is the main character.

Up first is In the Mood for Love (2000) which sees two strangers form a bond when they suspect their respective partners are having an affair with each other.

Deliriously sumptuous visuals invoke longing, memory, and desire, whilst a haunting score swells between the lovelorn protagonists as a kind of liminal, sonic space. Yumeji’s Theme, composed by Shigeru Umebayashi, will haunt you long after you’ve left the cinema.

A masterful, potent, meditative audiovisual experience that exudes yearning from every frame and bar.

Our online slow reading group is back, starting again on Monday and continuing monthly until December.

The group will be continuing their exploration of the multiple ecologies of the contemporary, tackling Bruno Latour’s Down to Earth: Politics in the New Climatic Regime.

As with all our previous Slow Reading sessions, we will be reading Down To Earth together, out loud and slowly. No special expertise is needed to participate in these sessions other than an interest in contemporary ecological issues, reading with others, and a willingness to discuss ideas.

A PDF copy of the text will be provided via email for all participants.

First session: Mon 15 July, 6.30pm-8pm

We wanted to share a sneak peek of our screening and live performance coming up next week.

There's still time to get your free ticket and join us for an evening of film followed by a devotional vocal performance.

Throughout the evening we will reflect on themes emerging within our current exhibition - Hamid Zénati: Two Steps at a Time.

The screening includes several short films that explore colonial violence in the Sahara and the resistance rooted in this environment. They will be briefly introduced by Emma Bouraba and include ‘Memories of an Unborn Sun’ (2024) by Marcel Mrejen, ‘Galb'Echaouf’ (2021) by Abdessamad el Montassir and ‘And still, it remains’ (2021) by Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah.

Following the screening, Assia Ghendir will present a devotional vocal performance in response to the natural forms, textures and designs that inspired Zénati’s 'all-over' style.

Please note a separate ticket is required for the screening and performance.

In Focus: Julian Abraham ‘Togar’ - OK Studio

Julian Abraham ‘Togar’’s exhibition in Gallery 1, REꓘONCILIATION continues an ongoing project called OK Studio. OK Studio started in 2020 when Togar was on residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. During his residency, Togar put a drumkit in his studio, and as other residents overheard him drumming, they started to visit his studio, sometimes sitting and listening, and sometimes bringing their own instruments to play.

Togar’s interest in how music was bringing people together led to the foundation of OK Studio, an immersive sonic environment centred around kinetic sculptures and a series of automated and playable musical instruments which offer audiences a chance to co-experiment, co-imagine and co-produce.

Have you played any of the instruments in our gallery yet? Visit us and join in!

It’s that time again…we are delighted to invite you to another one of our Wednesday Walkthroughs. This time we have Sheyda Aisha Khaymaz; an artist, curator, and PhD candidate, giving a gallery tour to share expertise relating to the concepts explored in Hamid Zénati’s exhibition, Two Steps at a Time.

During this walkthrough Sheyda will introduce the visual milieu of post-independence Algeria through an exploration of Zénati and the Algerian artist group Aouchem. It was during the post-independence era that many Algerian artists, including Zénati himself, sought refuge in European cities, which in turn, informed their artistic expressions. Join us to learn more about the history of Algeria and how it influenced the vibrant work of Hamid Zénati.

Dead Cat Bounce, a performance in collaboration with Gary Zhexi Zhang and Waste Paper Opera, is coming soon and we can't wait!

Set in the strange light of uncertain times, "Dead Cat Bounce" narrates a tale of unpayable debts, entangled histories, and recurring jokes. Presented within a sculptural setting, the act unfolds as an oratorio, a baroque style of performance where instruments and vocals are used to convey a sacred narrative.

Musically, the work is loosely based on Jomelli's "Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah," reimagined through Waste Paper Opera's method, which fuses the ludicrous with the sacred, blending spontaneous elements with composed segments.

In Focus: Hamid Zénati - Algerian Independence

Hamid Zénati's birth country of Algeria endured 132 years of colonisation under French rule starting from the French capture of Algiers in 1830 and continuing until the end of the brutal 8 year revolutionary war in 1962.

Hamid turned 18 the same year that Algeria won their independence and the nation set about forging a distinct Algerian identity and national culture after more than a century of European rule, and a new era of Algerian Modernism was born.

There's a section of Gallery 3 exploring the context of Algerian independence, including a copy of Samia Henni's publication 'Colonial Toxicity: Rehearsing French Nuclear Architecture and Landscape in the Sahara'

If you’d like to learn more about Algerian history and Hamid Zénati’s experience, join us for a special walkthrough with historian Sheyda Aisha Khaymaz who contributed some of the explanatory captions in this section of our galleries.
