While skywatchers across the UK were enjoying Wednesday’s spectacular partial solar eclipse, scientists at Jodrell Bank Observatory were busy catching it on a completely different wavelength! 🌙☀️
Using the Observatory's 7-metre telescope, JBCE Director Tim O’Brien watched the Moon block out the Sun's radio waves. This approach is especially useful in poorer weather, as radio waves pass right through any clouds.
As the eclipse got underway, the Sun’s radio brightness took a noticeable dip, hitting its lowest point at the peak of the eclipse at 7:10 pm. Then around 7:30 pm, the Sun ducked behind the giant Lovell Telescope making the graph go a bit wild! 📡
The 7-metre dish is one of several telescopes at the Observatory, mainly used for training University of Manchester students to study emission from hydrogen gas in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies.
