Over the years it has introduced such international photographers as Juergen Teller, Robert Capa, Sebastião Salgado, Andreas Gursky and Taryn Simon to British audiences, whilst championing

the work of home based practitioners including Martin Parr, Zineb Sedira, Nick Knight and Corinne Day. �

In May 2012, after an ambitious two-year redevelopment to offer new and enhanced spaces for exhibitions, learning, retail and social activities, The Photographers’ Gallery re-opened in its new home in Ramillies Street, Soho, London. It continues to present a diverse and critically acclaimed public-programme of exhibitions, events, talks, workshops and courses that encourage deeper engagement with, and learning through the photographic medium.

Japanese Women Photographers: From 1950s to Now is a landmark exhibition rewriting the story of Japanese photography through the eyes of women.

Curatorial consultant Kymara Akinpelumi talks us through four of the Japanese women photographers that you need to know!

The exhibition spotlights the work of 27 groundbreaking artists from the past 70 years or so, with their perspectives shaping how Japan sees itself, and how it is seen by the world.

Join photographer Lúa Ribeira as she presents her book, Agony in the Garden at The Photographers' Gallery with a talk and signing on Thursday 3 September!

Agony in the Garden is a series by Lúa Ribeira created in the peripheries of Madrid, Málaga, Granada and Almería. Inspired by the potential of contemporary counter-culture, she has collaborated with young people to make images that reflect on the alienation and uncertainty of the present era, resulting in a landscape suspended in time - one that appears both contemporary and ancient.

From this dystopian and sometimes absurd atmosphere, Agony in the Garden reflects on the current phenomenon of material overproduction, widespread precariousness, institutional violence, and ongoing financial, migratory and environmental crises.

Lúa will be in conversation with Head of Exhibitions, Clare Grafik and signed copies of the book will be available to purchase from our !

Based at Wigwell Lodge, this two-month residency is for artists working with expanded photography and digital practices. This is an opportunity to research, experiment and expand thinking around photography, technology and innovative approaches to image making and visual culture.

In a day of talks on Friday 18 September featuring three of the exhibiting artists from our Japanese Women Photographers: From 1950s to Now exhibition.

Three artists from the Japanese Women Photographers exhibitions in London and Tokyo – IWANE Ai, NAGASHIMA Yurie and NARAHASHI Asako – will speak about their practice. Each artist will also take part in a moderated discussion about their work in relation to the attitudes toward, and achievements of, women photographers in Japan.

Writer, critic and photography curator TAKEUCHI Mariko looks at the wider conditions for women in Japan in her keynote talk.

We've got a new drink for you in the café!☕️

Tied to our Japanese Women Photographers exhibition, we've launched a new drink in the café for a limited time.

Hōjicha is a Japanese green tea that differs both in taste and processing from the usual green teas and matchas.

The nutty, smoky, slightly sweet flavour of Hōjicha comes from the process of roasting the tea leaves at high temperatures to prevent oxidation and transforms them from a green colour to a light brown colour. It also vaporises some of the caffeine, reducing the overall caffeine content - making it a comforting alternative drink in the afternoons and evenings.

Learn more about what to consider when buying photographs and starting or building your own collection in our new 'Collecting Photography' course starting 12 October!

Collecting Photography is a course for those considering starting a collection and for people with a collection who want to refine their knowledge and understanding of acquiring photographs.

The four-week course will boost your knowledge and understanding of collecting photography through lectures and demonstrations led by course leader Justine Gruser. She will begin with a short introduction to key moments and formats of photography throughout its 200-year history, followed by a variety of practical ideas and information related to collecting photography.
