The gallery was back exhibiting at Art Dubai this week twenty years after Ben Floyd and John Martin started the fair. Dubai came out in force to see art, talk art, buy art, pose (of course!) and party long after the doors closed. Here are some photos from the week, mixed with memories of Art Dubai taking its first steps twenty years ago.

It was incredible to be back for the anniversary, seeing friends who helped shape the region’s art scene into the powerhouse it has become. Here are some photos from the week, mixed with memories of Art Dubai taking its first steps twenty years ago.

Shifting the focus to the climbers, paragliders, and inhabitants of the high Swiss Alps that bring Uwe Walther’s imagined landscapes to life. By studying the contours of maps, these subtle details emerge - enhancing the sense of gravity, scale, and vast distance within each scene.

Uwe Walther’s new exhibition is centred around seventeen maps, each a location of one of the legendary mountain refuges of the Swiss Alpine Club. Built on a lifelong love of maps and climbing the artist takes the language of cartography as a framework for creating soaring, bird’s-eye views of imaginary mountain landscapes. As Uwe says, "these are not real places, they are fictions created out of precise data !"

These three blossom-filled works by Richard Cartwright are all created using pastel - an uncommon and demanding choice for works of such scale and ambition. With a finely tuned sensitivity to refracted colour, he layers tones to create a luminous softness and depth, giving each piece its distinctly dreamlike atmosphere. Melancholic, tender, and timeless, his works read like quiet visual poems.
