Marlborough London is pleased to present an upcoming exhibition of new paintings by Joe Tilson opening 10 April. Following on from his 2016 show, ‘Stones of Venice’, this collection continues to draw upon Tilson’s love and knowledge of the city he has visited for over 60 years, bringing together over 18 works on canvas, painted in acrylic with his characteristic use of bright colour and expressively layered texture. The exhibition straddles the unveiling of two exciting public installations by the artist in Venice. | Image: Stones of Venice Ca di'oro, 2018.

Between 1950-69, Victor Pasmore worked on a series of multiple public projects, creating large scale murals and projective constructions to sit cohesively within the built environment. The viewer was invited to join in the open-ended process of engagement with the work and to relate to it physically within a shared environmental space. Currently on view at Marlborough London is an exhibition of Pasmore’s works from 1960-70 and includes a large mural, on linen, Pasmore created for his Tate exhibition in 1965. | Image: Pasmore creating a mural in the staff canteen at Pilkington Glass Works, Lancashire, 1960. “I try to become a channel so that the truth of the subject can come through me into the canvas, on to the drawing, whatever it is I’m working on. So, there’s a subject that’s in charge of me rather than the other way around.” - Maggi Hambling. The exhibition ‘For Beauty is Nothing but the Beginning of Terror: Maggi Hambling Paintings and Drawings’ is now open at CAFA Art Museum in Beijing. There are over 60 works on view by Hambling from the 1960s to the present day. | Image: Night Wave Breaking I, 2005.

Stop by Marlborough London to view the exhibition ‘Victor Pasmore: Space as Motif’. In the late 1960s, Pasmore adopted a more painterly quality to his abstract works adding natural forms and curves. This was conveyed using new techniques such as sponge and spray painting, he also experimented with a more vibrant colour palette in his output from this decade.

Happy International Women's Day from everyone at Marlborough London, we are proud to continue exhibiting work by pioneering female artists. Today we are celebrating the work of Paula Rego, who strives to explore the multifaceted experiences of women in society through her own cast of personal characters. She is unafraid of using literary narratives and allegories as a vehicle to comment on social issues. Rego’s female protagonists are the antithesis to the idealised female characters of canonical art history. | Image: ‘Girl with Gladioli and Religious Figures’, 1997.

Victor Pasmore first exhibited at Marlborough London in 1961. The exhibition explored the interplay between Pasmore's relief constructions and his experimentation in the shape and colour of linear forms. Currently on view at the gallery is a selection of his works from 1960-70 in the exhibition ‘Victor Pasmore: Space as Motif’ open until 30 March. | Image: Victor Pasmore installation view, 1961. Artworks | Marlborough

Celia Paul’s solitary figures often sit or stand in undecorated surroundings, sometimes in close up, sometimes dwarfed by emptiness, with a quiet demeanour, melancholy, lost in contemplation – the expression on their faces echoes intense but silent emotion. Paul’s preferred medium for printmaking is softground etching and her subjects are often centred on her family, including depictions of her mother and sisters. Victor Pasmore viewed his works from the period of 1960-1970, as essays in the language of pure form in two and three dimensions which he found satisfying, meaningful and capable of an infinite variety of expression. “If we take a sheet of paper and scribble on it vigorously, we become involved in the process of bringing into being something concrete and visible which was not there before. The shape and quality of what we produce is the outcome of forces both objective and subjective: a particular tool, a rotary action and a human impulse.”- Victor Pasmore, 1969. The exhibition ‘Victor Pasmore: Space as Motif’ opens on 22 February; the show provides a unique chance to view seminal works by the artist created between 1960-70. | Image: ‘Golden Ochre, Brown Image’, 1964, oil on board.

Work of the Week: R.B. Kitaj’s ‘Mother and Child (Tempest)’, 1986, from the exhibition ‘R.B. Kitaj: A Survey’ held at Marlborough London in 2015. Deeply enigmatic and contemplative, Kitaj’s paintings interlace allusions to political history with motifs of European literature and references to popular culture. The show was comprised of over 40 works from the 1950s until the artist’s death in 2007 and showcased Kitaj’s practice, from painting and draughtsmanship to his work with collage and pastels.

A selection of Anish Kapoor prints are available to acquire on Marlborough London’s website > goo.gl/CJr3LV. Kapoor’s prints are successful at translating the essential elements of his sculptural work – the movement between solid and intangible, dark and light, empty and full – into two-dimensional form. The combination of the intense pigment and white space in this work creates a sort of vortex which has the effect of drawing us in. | Image: ‘Fold II (orange)’, 2014, etching, edition of 20, 96.5 x 121.9 cm.

Happy Birthday to Paula Rego. Born in Lisbon in 1935, Rego is one of Europe’s most influential contemporary figurative artists. A painter of “stories”, Rego creates works imbued with mystery and disquieting tensions below the surface. Her large paintings and etchings depict psychologically charged human dramas and narratives. Her work is included in numerous public collections including the Arts Council, London; Berardo Collection, Lisbon; British Museum, London; National Gallery, London; National Portrait Gallery, London; Tate Gallery, Liverpool and the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester. Paula Rego’s series, ‘Dancing Ostriches’, transforms Fantasia’s famous ballet dancing animals into humans who retain their animality. In doing so she offers an implicit commentary upon dance as a particularly female discipline and upon Western audiences’ fascination with the romance of ballet. Rego endows her dancers with facial expressions, physical imperfections and sexuality to contrast the façade of perfection cast on depictions of the ballet through art and film. | Image: ‘Dancing Ostriches from Walt Disney’s Fantasia’, 1995.

Work of the Week: Catherine Goodman’s ‘Blue Valley’, from the exhibition ‘Worlds Within’ at Marlborough London in 2012. Goodman’s work will be on view at Hauser & Wirth Somerset opening 9 January. Her practice includes expressionistic landscapes, vigorous sketches, experimental collages and portraits; central to her process is the act of drawing from observation, whether from life, objects or the great masters and their works.

Lucian Freud, ‘Kai’, 1991-2, etching, edition of 40. In many of Freud’s etchings, he rejects hints of fashion and technical innovation- anything that might interpose itself between the perception of fact and the expression of truth.
