For Frieze Masters, we’re bringing Manina back to London for her first presentation since 1953.

Austrian-Italian pioneering artist Manina (1918-2010) is one of the most distinctive post-war surrealists of generation. Celebrating her enduring legacy, the gallery presents rare works released from the estate exclusively for Frieze.

For Frieze London, we present Something The Matter, bringing together Helen Chadwick and Cathy de Monchaux.

Chadwick’s life was tragically cut short in 1996 at the age of 42. This year marks the 30th anniversary of her death.

De Monchaux reflects on their friendship, which grew from exhibiting together around the world in the 90s:

“Our conversation was initially through our works’ juxtaposition, but it led to a great friendship and camaraderie. Meetings between our work and ourselves took on a global and exotic reach. Sydney, São Paulo, Rio, Buenos Aires, Helsinki and St Petersburg were the backdrop.

I was delighted when Richard Saltoun invited me to participate in this joint booth with Helen Chadwick’s Estate. Long may the conversation between our work last. I only wish she were here in person to be part of it.”

Helen Chadwick and Cathy de Monchaux are included in The 90s: Art & Fashion at Tate Britain, curated by Edward Enninful, OBE.

The first image is ‘Nostalgie de la Boue’, which translates as a ‘desire for degradation and depravity’, where Helen Chadwick juxtaposes earthworms, the lowest form of life, with an imploding human scalp. The work consists of two vertically arranged lightboxes with Cibachrome transparencies, mounted on the wall.

The top image features an entwined ring of earth-worms in the shape of a flower, while the bottom, egg-shaped object shows the erosion of the cranium. The ‘brain’, represented by the scalp, is placed between the ‘bowels’, the earthworms, thus re-versing the normal order of things and questioning the hierarchies of life. As Chadwick states, ‘the
mind and body are constantly flipping over one another and will not settle down.’

We look forward to showing the two artists next week at Frieze London, for our dual presentation ‘Something The Matter’.

Visit us this weekend at Untitled Art, Houston!

Our presentation unites visionary women artists: Leonora Carrington, Sofia Bassi and Cossette Zeno use metamorphic bodies, symbolic motifs and biomorphic forms to give shape to psychic and imagined worlds.

Bea Scaccia engages the uncanny and monstrous to destabilise body, identity and surface. Olga De Amaral and Romany Eveleigh broaden the dialogue from outside Surrealism through distinct approaches: de Amaral transforms fibre into works charged with spiritual and sensory resonance, while Eveleigh uses abstraction, gesture and mark-making to create spaces for contemplation.

Across these distinct practices, the metaphysical becomes a means of exploring transformation, resistance and self-invention.

Looking forward to Untitled Art Houston opening tomorrow!

Our presentation unites 6 visionary women artists whose practices intersect through material, metaphysical and psychological experience: Bea Scaccia, Sofia Bassi, Cossette Zeno, Olga de Amaral, Romany Eveleigh and Leonora Carrington.

Rather than proposing a single surrealist lineage the presentation traces affinities between Surrealism’s twentieth-century avant-garde, its contemporary bastions, and pioneering artists beyond the movement who similarly investigate transformation, spirituality and worlds beyond the visible.

“Admittedly, there is a mind-boggling amount of spectacular art on display at the Breuer, particularly by late women artists who were inadequately recognized in their lifetime. Take the paintings of Austrian-Italian Surrealist Manina at Richard Saltoun Gallery. A Dadaist muse, she began painting in the 1940s after meeting Frida Kahlo in Mexico, filling canvases with mythic visions of femininity that combine minutely applied brushstrokes against explosive color passages. She exhibited with Magritte at the Hugo Gallery in New York and even showed at the Venice Biennale in the ’60s, but Manina is far from a household name, in part because the tragic death of her only daughter left her without an estate, the gallery’s director Monica King explained.”

Thanks Valentina Di Liscia for shining a light on Manina in this piece for Hyperallergic 🙌

Visit us at British Art Fair!

Our stand presents works by pioneering artists Basil Alkazzi (), Dia al-Azzari (), Chila Burman (Chila Kumari Burman), Felicity Powell, Anne Saïd and Stella Snead (Stella Snead Archive), whose practices reflect the breadth of twentieth-century modernism. Expanding on traditional narratives of Modern British art, they reveal how the definition of ‘British’ has evolved to encompass diverse histories, perspectives and experiences.
