Inspired by her Syrian heritage, Yasmin Hayat has developed a language of painting which is derived from an old Arabic style and incorporates contemporary Western and Indo-Persian techniques.

She experiments with pigments which she hand makes from minerals, plants and earths. These tactile and luminous colours, which are consciously selected due to their relation to the painted subject, result in a dimensional finish which transforms, moves and reflects, just like the stories depicted.

Yasmin sources the raw materials from around the world and meticulously refines and processes these ingredients to craft an individualised palette, which is completely unique to each painting she makes.

This exquisite artwork is part of The Miniature Show - on view until 28th January 2023. The show is extremely popular, visit our website to purchase online.

Craig Wylie's work revolves principally around the search to extend the genres of still-life and figure painting.

He has an extraordinary ability to seize the appearance of his subjects with tremendous fluency and ease, but this is only the start.

Working from life, with forays into the use of a laptop for his large portrait heads, Wylie has developed a multi-faceted but singular approach to these genres.

Wylie's works are now on view in The Miniature Show, a collection of small-scale artworks by our gallery artists. Visit our website to view online.

Great to see artist Janet Marsh in the gallery with her new series of miniature paintings, created for our exciting new exhibition.

For this series of botanical art, Janet has used watercolour on vellum, "to give a special luminosity and exotic clarity to the venation on a leaf or butterfly's wing, which excites me even on small scale".

Coming soon.
... With some of 'Masterworks II' still up until we begin next week.
"Place affects me deeply. I enjoy the intimacy of knowing a place well, the reassurance that comes with understanding the lay of the land and where paths and tracks lead, the scents that become signposts of the changing seasons and the various sounds that indicate the time of day.”

Jonathan Cooper’s solo exhibition by Rosie Sanders 'Spirit of Place', focuses on a particular area of ancient woodland where she walks every day, and it is the trees and the flora of these woods which have become her inspiration for her work.
On view at 20 Park Walk, London until October 2.

We're excited for Masterpiece London online this month! We produce videos to showcase art and antique businesses, gallery tours, exhibitions and catalogues - just like this exert from a piece we've just done with Jonathan Cooper.

‘‘Those are good pigs,’ he said, ‘aren’t they?’

If he had said they were bad pigs I should have agreed with him equally. Their shape meant nothing to me.

‘Good length,’ he explained, ‘broad in the back and not too much head.’

I strove to see it, but no person can appreciate the points of a pig till he has dwelt long with them. Looking back, I cannot tell at what point I began to know a good pig from a bad one. The farmer’s eye is as subtle as the artist’s.’

Adrian Bell appreciates Mr Colville’s farming expertise in his first memoir, Corduroy, which is we recently reissued in our series of Plain Foxed Editions.
.
These little (or not quite so little) pigs, Rebecca Campbell’s ‘The Foragers’, appeared on the cover of Issue 29 of Slightly Foxed magazine. We’re certainly not experts but they look like good pigs to us!
.
Rebecca Campbell is an artist and illustrator who lives and works in London. Her influences are eclectic: a love of nature came from growing up in the Irish countryside with a menagerie of animals and birds, as well as being surrounded by the most beautiful gardens. She has been showing her paintings with Jonathan Cooper in London, since 2002.

On May 17 2021, The Shirley Sherwood Gallery will reopen with the exhibition: ‘A Botanical Rainbow’. We're SO excited. 🤩

In this video, Shirley discusses Daphne Gradidge’s ‘Red’, an intricate assemblage of apples, hips, and leaves. Vibrant tones of crimson and scarlet run throughout the composition – the perfect introduction to our botanical rainbow. 🌈

‘Red’ was previously exhibited at the Jonathan Cooper Gallery in Chelsea and will be shown again at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery in ‘A Botanical Rainbow’. The exhibition will celebrate the vast spectrum of colour to be found within the plant world. It's sure to be a vivid and uplifting showcase of work! ⭐️

Daphne’s skills in painting have brought her into many disciplines, such as theatre design and mural restoration. Now, she's returned her focus to personal interests, painting mainly from her studio, creating delicate botanical artworks.

📍 ‘Red’ is one of three works by Daphne in the Shirley Sherwood Collection - see them all on our website: https://shirleysherwood.com/~543

📍 ‘A Botanical Rainbow’ commences on May 17 2021, running until late September at The Shirley Sherwood Gallery at Kew Gardens, see more information here: https://bit.ly/3mXsieR

‘Spring's first dandelion . . .’
.
‘Simple and fresh and fair from winter's close emerging,
As if no artifice of fashion, business, politics, had ever been,
Forth from its sunny nook of shelter’d grass—innocent, golden, calm
as the dawn,
The spring's first dandelion shows its trustful face.’
Walt Whitman, ‘The First Dandelion’
.
Rosie Sanders’s ‘Dandelions and other flowers’ appeared on the cover of Issue 49 of Slightly Foxed magazine.

Rosie Sanders is a Devon-based painter and printmaker specializing in plants. Her often bold and powerful watercolours of flowers express life and energy and sometimes fragility, not just depiction or imitation. Always innovative, her work challenges the boundaries and perceptions of contemporary botanical art. She exhibits regularly with Jonathan Cooper Gallery of Park Walk Gallery in London.

Oil on canvas

Geneviève Daël's mysterious and atmospheric interior scenes often include meditative female figures viewed in profile or from behind. While depicting the elegant interiors of France and Italy, the lyrical atmosphere of her works shares an affinity with the Northern European traditions of the Dutch Golden Age and Hammershøi.
