Stop by ACA Galleries to experience DNA and Royalty, along with other monumental fiber portraits by Kandy G Lopez. 

Born in New Jersey and raised in South Florida to Dominican parents, Lopez’s practice is shaped by diasporic experience and the negotiation of identity across cultures. Her bold use of color reflects the vibrancy and hybridity of Caribbean and urban American life, while her commitment to portraiture becomes a means of reclaiming visibility for those historically overlooked.

What an incredible night ✨

We are grateful to everyone who joined us the evening of Friday, October 2 for the conversation between the artist Kandy G Lopez and Donette Francis. Donette Francis directs the Center for Global Black Studies at the University of Miami, where she teaches in the Department of English and Creative Writing. 

Together, they discussed Kandy’s latest body of work and the stories, places and communities woven into it, along with the questions of identity and belonging that run through her practice.

Taking up Space is on view through October 24. We welcome you to see these powerful works in person!

ON VIEW NOW | HELEN MCBRIDE RICHTER AT THE ARMORY SHOW 🧵

Helen McBride Richter’s hand-dyed cotton quilts are on view in ACA Galleries’ Women in Fiber presentation at The Armory Show.

Born and raised in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Richter was drawn from an early age to the bright buttons and cloth that passed through the hands of the women around her. She learned to knit and quilt from her mother and the women of their church, many of them African American women from the South. Later, at a local clothing factory, her Spanish-speaking colleagues encouraged her to sew. Richter has kept the fabric these women gave her for decades, and pieces of it still find their way into her quilts today.

Richter holds degrees in nursing and midwifery and studied textile design at Parsons School of Design. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and Europe, including at the International Quilt Museum and the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art.

OPENING TODAY | CHINEMEREM ‘EME’ OMEH AND KANDY G LOPEZ FEATURED IN PHILLIPS NEW YORK EXHIBITION

ACA Galleries is pleased to share that two of our artists, Chinemerem ‘Eme’ Omeh and Kandy G Lopez, are featured in Art of the Covenant: Global Africa at the Crossroads, a new exhibition on view today through September 30 at Phillips New York.

Presented by Joshua Dekking in collaboration with The Asaa Group and Phillips, Art of the Covenant is timed to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly and explores the spiritual contract connecting us to our ancestors and our children, the inheritance we carry forward and our obligations to future generations.

The exhibition asks audiences to consider Africa’s past and future not as separate chapters but as a single, continuous covenant.

Bringing together 15 artists, the exhibition features works engaging with memory, migration, spirituality and the visual language of the African diaspora. Each artist offers a distinctive perspective shaped by ancestral knowledge, contemporary practice and diaspora consciousness, creating a dialogue around identity, belonging and the ongoing legacy of African peoples across the globe.

Chinemerem ‘Eme’ Omeh’s psychologically charged paintings explore identity, memory and the interior lives of his subjects, while Kandy G Lopez’s monumental fiber portraits honor the individuality, dignity and presence of people from her own community. Together, their practices contribute distinct and deeply personal perspectives to the exhibition’s wider dialogue.

Gbenga Akinnagbe is co-curator of the exhibition.

Taking up Space: New Works by Kandy G Lopez is now on view at ACA Galleries through October 24, 2026.

Through a new series of richly layered fiber portraits, Lopez honors the power, dignity and individuality of people from her own community. Each subject is someone the artist has met and engaged with in her daily life, rendered with cultural memory, vulnerability, resilience and unmistakable presence.

Working with yarn and acrylic on hook mesh, Lopez constructs each portrait thread by thread. The monumental scale of the works ensures that her subjects are not simply seen but command the space around them.
