MUSEUM ACQUISITION | KANDY G LOPEZ

We are delighted to celebrate the acquisition of Kandy G Lopez’s ‘Hispaniola II – Mia’ (2024) by the Orlando Museum of Art for its permanent collection.

The large-scale fiber portrait was presented at the museum as part of the 2025 Florida Prize in Contemporary Art. During the exhibition, Lopez won the People’s Choice Award, receiving more than one-third of all ballots cast.

Created with yarn and acrylic paint on hook mesh, ‘Hispaniola II – Mia’ represents those with roots in La Hispaniola, the present-day nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The work was acquired by the museum’s Acquisition Trust through the Charles E. Meiner Endowment Fund.

The museum’s CEO, Cathryn Mattson, said the institution was proud to add Lopez’s award-winning work to its permanent collection, calling it a reflection of the museum’s commitment to artists whose work sparks conversation and connection.

‘Hispaniola II – Mia’ is currently on view in Represent: Contemporary Figuration and Portraiture from the Collection at the Orlando Museum of Art through November 8, 2026.

The acquisition comes as we prepare to open Taking up Space: New Works by Kandy G Lopez, the artist’s third solo exhibition at ACA Galleries.

IN THE STUDIO | KANDY G LOPEZ

Step inside Kandy G Lopez’s studio as she shares the making of ‘Diana’, one of the latest artworks created for her upcoming solo exhibition at ACA Galleries.

For the background, Lopez is experimenting with a new technique that incorporates her own prints of the city. Layered beneath the mesh, fragments of the cityscape emerge through the portrait, adding depth and a sense of place to the work.

We can’t wait to reveal the completed ‘Diana’ when Taking up Space: New Works by Kandy G Lopez opens at ACA Galleries next week on September 10.

Afro-Caribbean American multidisciplinary portrait artist Kandy G Lopez honors the power, dignity, and layered identities of communities historically rendered invisible. Born in New Jersey and raised in South Florida to Dominican parents, Lopez’s practice is shaped by diasporic experience and the negotiation of identity across cultures. Her bold use of color reflects the vibrancy and hybridity of Caribbean and urban American life, while her commitment to portraiture becomes a means of reclaiming visibility for those historically overlooked.

The individuals she portrays are people she has met and engaged with in her daily life. They are not symbolic stand-ins, but real people whose presence carries cultural memory, resilience, vulnerability, and unmistakable swag.

BORN ON THIS DAY | ROMARE BEARDEN

Remembering Romare Bearden, born on this day in 1911.

“You should always respect what you are and your culture because if your art is going to mean anything, that is where it comes from.”

ACA Galleries has a long and devoted history of championing Romare Bearden’s work and legacy. The gallery served as the official representative of the artist’s estate for over a decade and has continued to present his work through numerous exhibitions ever since.

Born in North Carolina in 1911 and raised in Harlem at the height of the Harlem Renaissance, Bearden shaped a visual language rooted in ritual, music and the lived realities of Black America. Drawing on influences including Cubism, he developed an approach to painting and collage distinctly his own that would inspire generations of artists to come. Bearden was also a prolific writer, songwriter and advocate.

In 1963, Bearden co-founded the Spiral Group with Charles Alston, Norman Lewis and Hale Woodruff. Active from 1963 to 1965, the New York-based collective brought together African American artists to examine the role of Black artists within the Civil Rights Movement, politics and the wider art world.

ACA has continued to celebrate Bearden’s work through numerous exhibitions, including Urban Rhythms and Dreams of Paradise, A Black Perspective, Beyond the Spiral and, earlier this year, Continuum: Over 100 Years of Black Art. Most recently, his work was included in Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet in East Hampton, where Jazz II Deluxe (1980), pictured here on the first slide, was on view.

Today, on what would have been his 115th birthday, we celebrate Bearden’s extraordinary life, work and enduring contribution to American art.

Three recent paintings by Georgian artist Sergo Tbileli are featured in Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton: ‘Montauk Saint Patrick’s Day Parade’, ‘The Navy Yard’ and ‘Madam Bowery’ (all 2025).

Sergo Tbileli’s mother once gave up a treasured family rug in exchange for a fortune teller’s word that her son would shine through art. A prediction that turned out to be true.

Tbileli (b. 1958) studied under Sergo Kobuladze early in his career and later under Andrei Mylnikov in Saint Petersburg. During his studies, he worked on monumental murals and sculptures across the Soviet Union. In the late 1980s, he opened his own studio and became a professor at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts.

His paintings carry hundreds, sometimes more than a thousand, translucent layers of color made from paints he mixes by hand. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions from Montreal to Moscow and Vienna to Tehran.

John Marin’s watercolor ‘Late Summer, Castorland, New York’ dates from 1913, the year of the first Armory Show, and is among the works featured in Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton.

That summer of 1913, Marin worked along the Black River in Castorland, near the Adirondacks, painting the river valley and surrounding mountains. ‘Late Summer, Castorland, New York’ is among the landscapes he produced there, several years after returning to the United States following an extended period in Europe. His Castorland watercolors belong to a pivotal moment in both his career and the development of American modernism.

The exhibition is open today and tomorrow from 10 AM–6 PM. Be sure to stop by and see John Marin’s work in person before it closes tomorrow, Monday, August 31.

A closer look at the artwork of Earl H. Brewster (1878–1957), an American painter whose years in Italy and India shaped a body of work rich in landscape and light.

Like his wife, the painter and writer Achsah Barlow Brewster, Earl drew lasting inspiration from their life abroad and engagement with Indian spirituality. Both artists are represented in Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton, where Achsah’s ‘Fuchsias’ (1916) is also on display.

Achsah Barlow Brewster’s ‘Fuchsias’ (1916) is among the works featured in Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton.

Brewster (1879–1945) was an American painter and writer whose artistic life unfolded across continents. After attending Smith College, she trained at the Art Students League and the New York School of Art before continuing her studies in Paris.

With her husband, fellow artist Earl Brewster, she lived and worked across France and Italy before traveling through Ceylon and India, where Indian spirituality left a lasting mark on their art and writing. Their circle included D.H. Lawrence, Willa Cather and Elihu Vedder. In 1935, the Brewsters settled permanently in Almora, India, forming close ties with three generations of the Nehru family.

Brewster exhibited in Paris, Rome and India during her lifetime, and her work is held in the collections of Smith College and the Telfair Museum of Art. In 2007, ACA Galleries presented Divine Pursuit: The Spiritual Journey of Achsah and Earl Brewster, a dedicated exhibition accompanied by a catalog.

ACA Galleries was honored by a visit today from President Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States, to Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet at Ashawagh Hall in East Hampton.

President Clinton spent time viewing works throughout the exhibition, including Romare Bearden’s Bluer Than Blue (1981). We are grateful for his thoughtful engagement with the exhibition and his support for the artists it brings together.

Dorian Bergen and her son Vaughn were delighted to welcome President Clinton and give him a tour of the exhibition.

Vignettes: Where Two Roads Meet brings together a selection of paintings and drawings from the gallery’s collection. Spanning the nineteenth century to the present, the exhibition includes works by Milton Avery, Edward Mitchell Bannister, Romare Bearden, Arthur B. Davies, Balcomb Greene, Doowon Lee and Henry Ossawa Tanner, among others.
